Honestly, I thought I was done with Halo. I thoroughly enjoyed all three games and played the heck out of them. It’s no secret I have a special place in my heart for the trilogy. But I thought I had my fill of the Master Chief. Then I saw the trailer/teaser for Halo 3 Recon:
And they pulled me back in. I’m such a sucker for good marketing a good trailer.
I do, however, have a problem with the name. Why are they calling it Halo 3 Recon if this is supposed to be a prologue to the first Halo? Was Halo Zero not available? (I guess not)
Anyway, what do you guys think? Don Reisinger doesn’t think this is a good move for Microsoft. I’d have to agree. I think it’s time to let Halo (at least in its current FPS carnation) go. At least until the next Xbox is upon us. By then, we’ll be ready to take on the Flood once again.
But for now, let’s give it a rest.
Brock says
Meh. I don’t care. I don’t even particularly like this trailer.
The Halo 3 stuff… That was some amazing marketing. I will admit that I got sucked in by the diorama trailer and ended up reading all of the game summaries and extended Haloverse entries on Wikipedia, and even got ended up buying and playing through Halo 3… But as much as I like the Haloverse in concept, the execution in the game itself just felt dull to me… Esp. the storytelling aspects of it.
Of course, I’m one of those people who wish that Bungie would just stop with Halo and go back to work on doing more stuff in the Myth universe, but I’m crazy that way.
Zack says
Totally disagree. Halo is a license to print money and the throngs of people still playing it on XBL attest to the public’s desire to spend more money on a similar experience. I don’t see a reason not to do this.

Brock says
Hee hee. I agree that it would be insane for Microsoft NOT to put out more Halo related games, but I know I’m one of those people who won’t care one bit.
flamingsquirrel says
LOL NAT.
That picture is epic win.
Halo is extremely overrated. Multiplayer is solid, but the single player campaign in 2 & 3 are atrocious.
Brock says
You forgot about the single player campaign in 1 as well. At least Halo 3 kept me interested to the end, despite some glaring issues. I could never get into the campaign beyond the first few levels in the early games.
But Halo is and shall be the game that brought console FPS gaming to the forefront and is the FFVII of first person console shooters. It’s not the best example of the genre, but it was the first to really bust the mainstream open.
Jason O says
For pure involvement from start to finish, the Halo 2 single-player is still my favorite. I thought Halo was overrated, and Halo 3 was ok but the changes they made for multi-player ended up punishing good sports more than it hurt the serial quitters, so I ended up hating going on-line.
In fact, Halo 3 has been eclipsed as the on-line game of choice. I know at least COD4 and even Gears of War routinely have more people playing.
All that said, I’ll probably get this because Bungie does make some solid shooters and even the first 3rd of Halo was extremely well done even if it did rapidly descend into tedium afterwards.
Will says
I’d like to mention that Halo 3 Recon is a prequel to Halo 3, not the original. To be more specific, it starts right after one of the Prophets (Regret, or Truth, I’m not sure) beats feet via Slipspace and destroys New Mombassa, which takes place during Halo 2.
I’m one of those who love everything Halo and will eat up everything that is related to it. You and your commenters may be tired of it, but there are plenty of people like me who’ll keep dropping cash on this franchise.
Nat says
Oh, I’m not complaining about the story at all. I find it to be interesting.
It’s just that Bungie has a hard time doing it. I was hoping for something original from the Halo universe. It appears that they cannot let the cash-cow go.
Halo has become the Brothers in Arms of sci-fi games. Basically, it’s the same game over and over. I know the comparison is loose, but this is a game that has a 2009 release date. It’s a shame that it’s just…the same thing.
Time will tell, I guess.

@Nat – I always wondered if it was possible to embed an image in a WP comment. Now I know! And now I’m worried!
@Zack – From a business perspective, this makes absolute sense. I guess I’m just weary of yet another Halo, unless they can really do something different. Which I find doubt they can.
@Will – I misunderstood, I didn’t know that this game was between 2 and 3. Halo 2.5 then?
FWIW, I enjoyed all 3 single player games. I love that 3 ended with an homage to 1. I’ll probably end up with this one, too. I just wanted to complain 🙂
