You say potato…

March 19, 2010 by Tony 4 Comments

So I’m working on a post in which the concept of the “melee attack” will be part of, and it got to thinking what the right way to say the word “melee” was. Me, I normally say “may-lay“. I’ve also heard “mee-lay” and “mee-lee” (but never “may-lee“).

So I’m wondering: which camp are you in? Which was is the right way?

I’m also wondering: what are you playing this weekend?

    May-Lay is correct.

I’ve always understood “May-Lay” to be the correct pronunciation. However, I did say it that way to a native Frenchman, who did not know what I was saying. Perhaps I wasn’t putting the correct emphasis on it?

That isn’t unlike the time I say “anime” to a native Japanese speaker, and she had no idea what I was talking about. But that was because I was pronouncing it wrong.

Anyway, back to your question. This weekend I will be pushing myself through Final Fantasy XII with breaks for Perfect Dark and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

I am hoping to play a video game in any form this weekend. Whether that is an XBox game or a PC game it doesn’t matter as much as I actually get to play something.

    It’s May-Lay! Duh!

I’m playing God Of War 3, maybe some FFXIII, some Infinite Space and Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations.

I’ve got a copy of Fragile here too but I really want to leave it until I finish off God Of War at the very least.
