Never break the rules.

September 5, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

statham.jpgI saw The Transporter 2 this weekend. I’m a big fan of Jason Statham (even if he is going to participate in this trainwreck) and I really enjoyed the first Transporter. The second Transporter was an enjoyable diversion but it didn’t have quite the charm of the first.

In the first Transporter, there were a few “there’s no way” moments but not enough to stretch the suspension of disbelief too thin. Unfortunately, there were a few too many in the second one. In an attempt to out-do the first movie’s wow-factor, the Transporter 2 just went too far over the top. That’s saying a lot. Trying to out-do a movie that included deflecting a rocket with a serving tray (even though that wasn’t included in the US release) is a hard thing to do. The Transporter 2 tries to do it nonetheless. Everytime things started moving someting would happen that would make you go “there’s no way” and that just ruins the moment.

It was still a fun movie to watch but I wouldn’t pay full price for this one. Wait for the cheap theater or a rental for this one. Other good Statham flicks include The Italian Job and Cellular, both good movies.

Buckeye Blogging, Week #1 (1-0)

September 4, 2005 by Tony 4 Comments

The Buckeyes handled their business in preparation for the the Showdown with Texas next week, beating the Redhawks 34-14. The offense looked solid – Pittman carried the ball well and Zwick and Boeckman threw rather efficiently. The Buckeyes’ defense is just insane. The Miami Redhawks are a good team but they couldn’t get anything going. The defense held them to -5 yards rushing in the first half. The score doesn’t do justice to the first team defense, they could have easily pitched a shut-out. Overall, OSU’s performance was great and I am excited about next week. Even more so now that I know I’ll be in the stands for the Texas game.

Among the other games today, I was surprised at how well Notre Dame played and how poorly Oklahoma played. Adrian Peterson can kiss his Heisman Hopes good-bye. With no passing threat, OU’s running game is going to get punished. Michigan looked solid. So did USC. No other big surprises so far.

Did I mention how excited I am about the OSU/Texas game?

Update: I’m watching the FSU/Miami game right now. While I don’t really care who wins this game since I hate all things Florida football, I heard this guy’s name called a couple of times. That has to be the worse name to grow up with.

Another Update: This may warrant its own post at some point, but Bill at TBftSG has a post about Trev Alberts’ firing at ESPN. That sound you hear is a million Buckeyes cheering. Now, how do we get rid of May?

O-H! Iraq-O!

August 31, 2005 by Tony 3 Comments

For Buckeye fans, this picture needs no explanation:

O H Iraq O

For the uninitiated, there is a tradition at Ohio Stadium to chant O! H! I! O! with each section of the stadium yelling their letter while making the sign of the letter with their arms. This Marine, obviously an OSU fan, recruited some Iraqi children to participate in this great tradition.

This picture made my day.

MMORPG Sports (Part I)

August 30, 2005 by Tony 31 Comments

A while back I mentioned I had been playing a Golf MMORPG called Shot-Online. Since then, I’ve been back for a round here and there and my overall impression of S-O is that it’s an ambitious game that is fun to play and actually has players that are fun to be around. It got me thinking about Sports games as MMORPGs. Or at least MMOGs. Call them what you will, but I’ve seen them mostly referred to as MMOSG (Massively Multiplayer Online Sports Games). I wondered if there were other games out there trying the Massively Multiplayer genre of gaming. I also thought about where this “genre” of games could go. We already have online sports gaming that’s been relatively sucessful but I think there could be more. I don’t think role-players and sports fans are that far removed. They both pore over their players “stats” and play to their strengths while shoring up their weaknesses. The MMO “sphere” is ripe with possibilities.

This is a two-part article. The first part will be what I’ve found while I’ve looked for games that fit the MMOG mold. Part two will be some thoughts I’ve had and where I think this could go.

Stooges on a PSP

August 29, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

My Three Stooges post got some people thinking about the Stooges and all their shenanigans. I got a note from buttonMasher agentgray pointing me to this site with a link to the Disorder in the Court, the episode we were quoting. It’s in the public domain (its copyrighted expired long ago) so it should be legit. If you want a classic Three Stooges episode on your PSP (or you just want to watch some sweet Stooge action) check this out.

Update: I and should mention that this could also be played on your GBA/DS/GBmicro using the Play-Yan Micro device. After the Metroid Prime Hunters online news and now this, I think I just convinced myself it’s about time to get me a DS. Now I just need to convince the Boss (aka the buttonWife). That’s the tricky part. Of course I’ll have to import a Play Yan, but that’s just a technicality.

Prison Break

August 29, 2005 by Tony 4 Comments

I don’t watch much TV, but when I do I make sure it is quality entertainment. I limit myself to a couple “must see” shows at any given time, and I think I just found a new one – Prisonbreak.

Other than sports, (lots and lots of sports) I don’t watch much TV. My current faves are Arrested Development, 24, Lost, and Monk. (Update: I don’t know how I could forget my love of Food Network. I don’t watch any shows regularly, but my favorite show is Barefoot Contessa)

Like I said, quality entertainment.

Name that Game

August 29, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

Think you can “Name that Game” in three beeps or less? I thought I could and only got 12/18. I should probably have my “video game blogger” badge taken away. In my defense, there were a couple that I knew the answer to but thought they were trying to trick me.

Can you do better? Give it a try. (“Someone shot the food.” That is classic stuff!)

E-VEEL

August 29, 2005 by Tony 3 Comments

Resident Evil 4 PS2like it’s the FRU-EETS of the DEV-EEL.

I receive numerous hits a day looking for translations for the Spanish phrases in Resident Evil 4. Over time, people have commented on phrases I miss, so I’ve been updating that page as they come across.

I think it’s great that eight months after it was released, this game is still getting heavy play. I’ve said it before, I think RE 4 is the Game of the Year for 2005.
