For whom the bell tolls

March 12, 2007 by Tony 7 Comments

(or, alternatively, For whom the red lights flash)

It tolls (they flash) for me.

Mrs. buttonMasher mentioned to me earlier this week that the 360 was acting up, freezing during the kids movies, going fuzzy and finally it stopped working all together. I powered it up Saturday night and sure enough, I was greeted with the three flashing red lights. Anyone who’s dealt with a 360 before knows what that means.

I had previously watched with apprehension as people on my friends list would suffer the fate of the red lights. I read with pity about the guy who had seven boxes die on him. I even thought I had made a mistake buying extended warranty coverage on my 360. Then the inevitable happened — it happened to me.

Perhaps the catastrophic failure I had while playing Dead Rising was a portent of things to come. Maybe it was just the poor ventilation in my TV stand. Whatever the case, it’s dead now and there’s not much else I can do.

So in the mail goes my dead 360. I doubt I’ll be seeing it again for a couple weeks. Looks like the criminals in Pacific City just got a reprieve.

I hope they know it won’t last!

What I’m playing

March 9, 2007 by Tony 4 Comments

I have a new rule for my game playing — I’m limiting myself to one title per console at a time. A couple of games are exempt from the rule. Viva Pinata is one, since it’s a game my kids love to watch. So I can pop Viva in at any time. Another is Sudoku on Brain Age. That’s an excellent 5-minute gaming-fix game, so it’s exempt as well. So, with that in mind, here is what I’m playing:

CrackdownCrackdown – I haven’t played much Crackdown lately, as the kids have been monopolizing the TV of late. I’ve finished off the first two gangs, so I’m in no hurry to rush through the rest of the single player missions. I haven’t felt super compelled to jump back into Crackdown for some reason, but if I could get into a co-op game or two, that would definitely interest me. My first couple co-op games were a total blast, so I’m looking forward to more co-op craziness. If you see me online, don’t hesistate to send an invite. I’ll probably be on at some point since I have hundreds of orbs to gather. The way it looks now, I may do a little orb hunting this weekend.

I have the maps, afterall.

Everquest 2Everquest 2 – Right now, EQ2 is consuming the lion’s share of my gaming time. When my running mates are on, I’m out slaying monsters and doing quests. When they’re not on, I’m harvesting everything in sight and working on my tradeskills. I decided to go with Provisioner (the guy that makes food) because everyone’s got to eat, right? The crafting isn’t as engaging as I thought it would be at first, but it’s still a fun diversion. I just wish there was a way to make more than two items at a time.

I also made my way to Nektulos Forest, which is much too difficult for my little Bruiser, but has actually rekindled that feeling I had when I first played EQ1. My first couple weeks in EQ2 didn’t have that same feeling, but making it to the forest, where things are darker and more confined, reminded me of my first corpse runs in EQ1. Ahhh, those were the days.

Contact DSContact – Currently, Contact is getting the least amount of attention. I get to it about once a day (read: bathroom break) but I’m making steady progress. I started over from scratch a few weeks ago, so I had to replay through some of the content, but it wasn’t too painful. I’m now in the desert, trying to find all the pieces to a statue. I’ve exhausted all the places to look, and the only possibilities seem to be either buying a deed to a pyramid to explore (it’d take forever to get enough money for it) or figure out what outfit I need to wear to open a door in another pyramid.

Anyone with hints for getting past this point would be appreciated. Otherwise, Contact has been a fun little game. I’d classify it as an RPG-lite kind of game, which is okay with me.

So that’s what I’m playing. I’ll also think I’ll slip in a round or two of Tiger Woods when I get a chance. What are you guys playing?

Crackdown Maps (Agility and Hidden Orbs)

March 8, 2007 by Tony 5 Comments

I haven’t mentioned Crackdown recently, but I’ve been getting a lot of people looking for Crackdown Maps for both the Agility Orbs and the Hidden Orbs. I haven’t begun my orb quest in earnest yet, as I still have single player missions to complete, but I’m torn on whether or not I want to use these maps. Nevertheless, there are people who are looking for them, so here you go. Actual images after the jump.

The Carnival will be going up some time during the weekend.

Thanks to all those that have already submitted, and here’s top hoping we get a few more!

My Podcast Playlist

February 28, 2007 by Tony 8 Comments

PodcastingI’ve really been enjoying the podcast scene lately, and gaming podcasts in particular. For those who don’t know what a podcast is, think of it as talk radio on-demand. Pick a topic, pick a program that will aggregate all the files (I use iTunes) and have a listen. They’re like blogs with a human voice. Gaming podcasts are plentiful and there’s one for just about every aspect of gaming. There are podcasts for specific games, specific consoles, and just about everything else under the sun.

Read on for my Podcast Playlist.

I am an idiot.

February 26, 2007 by Tony 10 Comments

Okay, so that will probably not come as a surprise to many of you, but it’s true. Fortunately, I’m not completely crazy, there is actually a method to my idiotness.

It turns out, there was nothing wrong with my saved game.

I was thinking about Crackdown today at work (yeah, I have exciting days at work) and it dawned on me — when I was playing with Bobster, we located the Volk Kingpin, we just never went after him. He was out on an oil rig in the ocean. Turns out, I was looking in the wrong place last night. Argh!

I did a little search and found a Crackdown map and sure enough, I was right. There he was, the Volk Kingpin, happily tucked away on his little oil rig out in the water, not where I had initially thought he was. In my defense, here’s what threw me off. Look at this portion of the map:

Crackdown Map

As you can see, I killed General Natalya “White Fox” Gryzunova in one portion of the map, but she’s actually located at another spot. So I don’t know if she was supposed to get away in a car or something and I killed her too quickly or what, but it was driving me crazy that she wasn’t showing up where I actually killed her.

So all is well in Pacific City. I’ll be heading back to Crackdown after 24. I can’t wait.

Trouble in Crackdown Paradise?

February 25, 2007 by Tony 5 Comments

CrackdownSo over the weekend, I played a few hours of Crackdown co-op with buttonmashing.com friend Bobster. The experience was a total blast. I’ve never laughed as hard as I did playing Crackdown with someone else. The fun started kicking each other off high buildings and never stopped. Whether it was running over innocent pedestrians or flying over the rooftops, the co-op experience was top shelf. An absolute blast. My sides and head hurt I was laughing so much. If you’ve been there, you know what I’m talking about. So the co-op session was a success. The fall-out, however, might be a problem.

Since I was further along in the single player campaign, we decided to have Bobster host the game. After we took down the kingpin of Los Muertos, we turned our attention to the Volk gangsters. Before we played, I had taken out a couple Volk Generals, so we went to take those out first. We took down a handful of Volk Generals and then went our seperate ways. Today, I fired the game up to clean up the Volk and turn my attention to the Shai-Gen.

I pulled up the map and something was amiss. I looked at the list of Volk Generals, and one was missing (the kingpin). The first General I took down (one of the female Generals, I don’t remember who) was showing up as killed, but on the map it was showing her location as the location of the kingpin. Her actual location wasn’t shown on the map. So I cruised to where she should be, and sure enough, she was gone. The Agency was all over her location. So I headed over to where the kingpin should be (the place the female General shows up) and again, he was nowhere to be found. Crap! Something was not right.

I reset the game, reloaded my saved game and looked. Nothing changed. I couldn’t get the intel on the Kingpin, because the game thought I had already taken him out, even though I never fought him. So I was stuck. I could get to him because he was already gone, even though I never beat him.

Okay, so that was probably hard to follow. Long of the short is — I played co-op and my Crackdown save game seems to be corrupted now.

So I did what I always do with presented with a problem: I went to the oracle to present my problem. One of the first results was this post on Xbox360Fanboy. While it’s not exactly my problem, the comments make it seem like I’m not the only one with this type of problem.

Has anyone else who’s play Crackdown co-op had this problem? I hope this is something that can be fixed and I really, really, REALLY hope a fix will be forthcoming. It’d be frustrating if I had to start all over, just from some multiplayer bug. That would be a pain.

Super Mario Theme

February 23, 2007 by Tony Leave a Comment

The Super Mario theme is one of my favorites. Here’s a rendition of the theme by a guy beat-boxing and playing the flute. (via kottke). That would make a great (and equally annoying) ring tone.
