Pixel Art

October 13, 2011 by Tony Leave a Comment

I think because of a combination of Nostalgia, vague memories and really vivid ones, the Super Nintendo will always be my favorite console system ever. This short document about Pixel Art will explain, in part at least, why some of us loved it so much.

Dead Rising 2: Off The Record

October 11, 2011 by Tony 1 Comment

I’ve been meaning to post these for a while, but seeing how the game came out today, I should probably post how I am really excited about the idea of another Dead Rising game. Even if it really isn’t another Dead Rising Game.

The fact that it’s a “budget” title at forty bucks doesn’t hurt. Nor does the addition of new weapons (that don’t really look like new weapons). Bringing back Frank West doesn’t hurt, but after all we’ve been through, I’m pretty sad about how things worked out for him.

So, yeah, you’ll probably see me running around the Fortune City area wielding a nail-studded baseball bat, wrecking everything in sight.

Comic Watch [Basic Instructions]

October 10, 2011 by Tony Leave a Comment

Most of the Comic Watches have been bad comics that attempt to use video games as the punchline. Not Basic Instructions. Scott Meyer is clearly a gamer. I love the 2nd panel:

Black and White Nintendo 3DS

October 6, 2011 by Tony Leave a Comment

I haven’t really felt a desire to own a Nintendo 3DS. At least not any time soon. But after seeing this new black and white 3DS coming out in Japan, I might be changing my tune:

October Releases

October 4, 2011 by Tony 2 Comments

And so it begins. I hope you’re calendar’s open and your wallet full. This is the beginning of a stretch of game releases never before seen.

Xbox 360 banner

Week of October 4th
Just Dance 3
Rage – And just like that, the onslaught begins. Rage is one of those games that has had me intrigued since the first teaser websites started popping up years ago.
NBA 2K12
Dark Souls – I feel bad for Dark Souls. It should have a lot of momentum and excitement for newcomers to the series but it’s going to get lost in the shuffle of all the triple-A titles coming out the next two months.
Spider-man: The Edge of Time

Week of October 11th
Forza Motorsport 4 – Here’s another game that I definitely want to play but I don’t see that happening for a month or three.
Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record – And here’s the irony — of all the huge games coming out, I think I’m most excited about DR2, a game I’ve already played multiple times.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Week of October 18th
Batman: Arkham City – Normally, this is a day one get. But now? Who knows how far I’ll be in Rage. This could potentially be a “wait till it’s forty dollars” game.
Tropico 4
The Sims 3 Pets – Limited Edition – This will sell better than 90% of the games on the list.
Rocksmith – This game is a year and a half too late, right?

Week of October 25th
The Cursed Crusade
Disney Universe
Kinect Sports Season Two
Dance Central 2
Just Dance Kids 2
Battlefield 3 – And with that, your Xbox October is officially PACKED.

Being the bad guy

October 3, 2011 by Tony Leave a Comment

I know I’m not alone when it comes to making “moral” choices but I almost always choose the “good option.” I’d like to think it’s because deep down, there’s good in all of us.

I don’t know if it’s because I fear I’m going to miss something on the good path or I simply can’t do the “evil deed.” But I always end up being a goody two-shoes.

There’s a point in Grand Theft Auto IV where you on the roof of a buiding, overlooking a park. Down on the bench are your two targets. (If I remember correctly) one is mentally-handicapped brother who screwed up a job and the other brother is a cop. In order to advance the story, you have to take out one of them. I literally had to pause the game. I didn’t want to choose and I wanted a way out. Even though I was playing Nico Bellic, a reprehensible sociopath with no conscience and no remorse, I couldn’t do it.

I eventually did, but I didn’t like it.

So now that brings us to my current game, Fallout New Vegas. I’m only a few hours in, but I’ve already been introduced to the major factions in the game and have already been given a chance to align myself with one (or more) of them. The first choice was easy. The Powder Gangers seem like a bad bunch, so I’m not down with those guys. But now I’ve come into contact with Caesar’s Legions. They seem, at first glance, to also be engaging in some pretty brutal and evil practices. It may turn out that they’re good guys (no spoilers, please!) but for now, I have decided I’m all in. I’m aligning myself with the Legion and I’m doing as they do.

I’m already nervous what that may mean, but I’m just going to wing it and see what happens.

Muscle Memory

October 1, 2011 by Tony 2 Comments

We joke about how we can remember the jingle to an old commercial or quote a movie from 20 years ago but we can’t recite the first three sentences of the Constitution or know where Iran is on a map. But the fact is that repetition is one of the best teachers.

I’m reminded of this when I started playing Resident Evil 4 HD on the Xbox 360. Like getting on a bike after years without riding, I knew exactly what I was doing. After over FIVE years, it was as if it was only yesterday. It was strange, but there was no need for a tutorial (which is good, because I don’t remember there being one). In fact, I was freaking out that they had left out the “quick-turn” ability. You can’t play the game without that ability. Luckily, instead of pressing ‘B’ and pulling down on the control stick, you use ‘A’. Once I got that figured out, it was like olden times.

There are other games like this, but Resident Evil 4 and me are pals.

I imagine that Diablo 3 is going to be like this.

What games do you go back and it’s like you never left?
