June in Review

July 2, 2008 by Tony 3 Comments

Back with another monthly report for the activity and happenings here at buttonmashing.com.

June was a lazy month around these parts. Nat was unplugged and I played GTA IV. Nice summer weather was enjoyed and crazy storms were weathered. We had 22 posts with 67 comments. The site also celebrated its fourth anniversary.

Top posts
The following posts garnered the most eyeballs in June (outside of the regulars):

  1. Customizable NCAA 09 Covers
  2. Easter Egg in Google Reader
  3. Why All the Love for Metal Gear Solid 4?
  4. [2 Minute Review] Trials 2:Second Edition

Previously, on buttonmashing
One year ago, among other things, we were talking about Forza 2 for the 360.
Two years ago, I was marveling at the beauty of my brand new DS Lite.
Three years ago it was all about Guild Wars. My, how time and tastes change.
And four years ago? It was Wario Ware time.

Strange Searches
As always, a small sampling of the diverse paths that led people to our humble abode:

“let me show you this spreadsheet because” – oh man, don’t leave me hanging like that!
“360 button mashing techniques” – you mean, other than just… mashing them?
“easy way to get 5 day survivor achievement in dead rising” – There is none! There is only pain.
“eve in wall-e is ticklish” – I saw Wall-E (LOVED IT) but, for the life of me, cannot think of any reason why anyone would ever need to search for this. If you’ve seen the movie, you know the answer. If you haven’t, what train of thought brought this search phrase to your mind? I NEED TO KNOW.
“eve wall-e tickled” – Again, with the tickling and Wall-E!

Games being played
Not much has changed, for me at least. As I near the end of GTA IV (I think), I’m already wondering what might take its place. I also finished Super Mario Galaxy, but with only 70 stars, I still have lots of mileage left on that bad boy. My DS sits mostly unused, except for the occasional NY Times Crossword puzzle.

There you have it, another month come and gone.

2 Minute Reviews

June 12, 2008 by Nat 5 Comments

I’m getting sick and tired of online reviews and magazine reviews of games. I feel that if you’ve read one, you’ve read them all. Also, have you ever noticed that the reviews are getting longer? Every little nitpicking detail is gone over. I usually end up just reading the summarizing statements and the scanning the scores anyway—oh, man, the scores—don’t get me started.

I want to try something new: a 2 minute review—a review you can read quickly and get a (hopefully) good overview of what it’s about and if it’s worth the price to play.

I did a count and I have just under twenty new games that I can cover over the course of the summer. My requirements are this: that I play the game for 5 hours and then summarize (1) if I should keep playing and (2) is it good (+) or bad (-).

Maybe then I bring myself back to a little more sanity and you can hop along for the ride.

May in Review

June 1, 2008 by Tony 2 Comments

I started doing these “in Review” posts a while back, then got lazy and never got back to them. I’m picking up as if I never stopped, so here’s a look back at May here at buttonmashing.com.

May’s posting was (at least for me) adversely affected by the release of GTA IV. When it came down to either blog or GTA, GTA won out most of the time, resulting in a paltry 18 posts. Pretty weak-sauce.

Top posts

As usual, people are still searching for Resident Evil 4 translations, Halo 3 stats and MMO Sports games, so we’ll skip over those posts. The top three most popular recent posts were:

1. A Reason for All the Perfect Scores?
2. Why I Am Not Playing GTAIV
3. Pic Lens

GTA and pictures. That about sums up things recently around these parts!

Strange Searches

Of course, I would be remiss to not mention a few of the funny and sometimes troubling search terms that brought people to our humble site:

“how many video games do you finish each month” – Not as many as I’d like.

“eve is boring” – I get this one a lot more than you’d think. Ya, EVE Online isn’t for everyone, but maybe calling it boring is being a little harsh. Then again, mining asteroids can get tedious quickly.

“tales of symphonia tickling” – “Tickling” comes up quite a bit in searches (thanks, Nat) but this one takes the bizzaro cake for this month.

“adult games to play while travelling” – If you’re married, your options are severely limited.

“i want to trade my dirt bike for world of warcraft character” – That character better have some sweet gear.

“irony of agent toht reading life magazine” – That is something I had not thought about before. (For background, I use a picture of Toht (the scary dude from Raiders of the Lost Ark) for one of my posts)

I could go on, but I won’t bore.

Games being played

This list is actually pretty short. The month of May was spent mostly playing one of three games. What get to play comes down to one question. Are the kids up? If yes, then I’m playing Super Mario Galaxy (unless they ask for Mario Kart Wii). If no, then it’s GTA IV.

I’m working on posts for all three of these games, but they are both most excellent.

I’ll let Nat fill us in what games took up his month of May.

I also spent a large portion in May really getting hooked on Twitter. I don’t really know why or what it is, but I get the shakes when Twitter is down (which is quite often). The honeymoon seems to be over, but I still find myself there quite a bit.

I’m not really sure what June will bring (other than another year of blogging). At the very least, I’ll be finishing GTA IV. Who knows what happens after that.

That social thing

April 28, 2008 by Tony 6 Comments

Tweet!Usually, I’m a pretty early adopter for new technologies and what-not. I started blogging before it was really “blogging,” for example. But sometimes I resist new things, usually for no good reason. Services like Twitter and Tumblr just didn’t seem to make sense to me. I already had a blog — why would I want a micro-blog (Twitter) or a mini-blog (Tumblr)? Then I found a few interesting Tumblogs and signed up for one myself. Then I tried out Twitter and was instantly hooked. How did I not latch on to these earlier?

So I’m now addicted to Twitter. I’ve already hooked a couple friends on it and am actively working on a couple more to catch the wave. I tried to explain it to my wife, but that didn’t go over as well as I’d hoped. Regardless, I’m now a Twitterer (Tweeter?) and completely hooked.

I’ve already started following some of my fellow bloggers and some of you have already found my Twitter feed, but those of you interested in seeing what the fuss is and want to follow the absolutely riveting minutia of my day-to-day life, can follow me on Twitter here.

Beyond Twitter, I’ve looked into Friendfeed, which basically becomes a life-stream of everything I do online. It borders on creepy-stalkerish, and it is complete information overload. I actually hesitate to post a link to my Friendfeed, because it’s a little weird. Does anyone really care what stories I digg? Or what video I recently favorited on YouTube? Maybe someone does. For the truly intrepid, my Friendfeed is here.

Finally, I’ve recently been following a handful of people’s shared items in Google Reader. It’s a great way to find information other people find useful. I haven’t been using it as often as I’d like, but if you’re interested in seeing things I’m sharing, my Google Reader Shared Items feed is here. Yet another form of micro-blogging.

Do you Twitter? Do you Tumbl? Do you share? As resistant as I was at first, now I can’t get enough. Let me know what services you use/like. And of course post links to Twitter feeds and the like in the comments.

April Releases

March 31, 2008 by Tony 4 Comments

I missed the last couple of months of new releases due to illness and laziness (the same thing?) but I’m back at it with another month of video game releases, with a couple of doozies.

Xbox 360 banner
Week of April 1st
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year – Maybe it’s time to finally pick this one up.

Week of April 21st
NBA Ballers: Chosen One – The whole “NBA Ballers this year, NBA Street next year” thing never made sense to me. I’ll be skipping NBA Ballers, as I really liked the last version of Street (whatever it was called).

Week of April 28th
Grand Theft Auto IV – I wasn’t a huge fan of GTA:San Andreas, but I’m very interested in the next-gen iteration of Grand Theft Auto. I think I’ll pick this one up for sure.

Wii banner
Week of April 1st
WWII Aces

Week of April 7th
MiniCopter: Adventure Flight
Baroque – Baroque? Is this a sequel to Eternal Sonata or something? It’s an Atlus game, which always intrigues me.

Week of April 14th
Dream Pinball 3D
Okami – Another intriguing game. I know Okami for the PS2 was well received, so this will be at least a rental for me.
Emergency Mayhem

Week of April 21st
Mario Kart Wii – Another must-buy in the Buttonmashing household. It’s Nintendo and I am powerless to resist.
Target Terror
Wild Earth: African Safari
Battle of the Bands
Nitrobike

Week of April 28th
Castle of Shikigami III
Blast Works: Build, Trade & Destroy

Nintendo DS banner
Week of April 7th
Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled
Corvette Evolution GT

Week of April 14th
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time – Another Pokemon, already?
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness – And seriously! Can we just make one version of a Pokemon game once? Please?
Rondo of Swords
Teenage Zombies
Major League Baseball 2K8 Fantasy All-Stars

Week of April 21st
The World Ends With You
Dream Pinball 3D
River King Mystic Valley
High School Musical 2: Work This Out!
Cory in the House

Week of April 28th
Brain Voyage
Toy Shop
Tamagotchi Cornershop 3

PC banner
Week of April 7th
Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut Edition
Portal
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation & CSI: Dark Motives
Half-Life 2: Episode Pack
Team Fortress 2
Scrabble Journey

Week of April 21st
Sword of the Stars: Collector’s Edition
Turok

PS3 banner
Week of April 14th
Gran Turismo: 5 Prologue Forty bucks sure seems pricey for a demo. I’m just saying.

Week of April 21st
NBA Ballers: Chosen One
Monster Madness
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year

Week of April 28th
Grand Theft Auto IV

PSP banner
Week of April 7th
World Championship Cards
SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1

Week of April 28th
Iron Man

So that’s a pretty decent month, all things considered. You’ll want to stock up, too because, we’ll be heading for a pretty bleak summer. Which will be a perfect opportunity for everyone to get out of the house and soak up some rays!

I think I’ll pick up Mario Kart (because I’m a Nintendo whore and I can’t help myself) and Grand Theft Auto IV. Pretty interesting contrast there, wouldn’t you agree? Blue shells or baseball bats, what’s your weapon of choice?

Are you planning on picking anything up this month?

November in Review

December 5, 2007 by Tony 4 Comments

I just started this “Month in Review” recurring post last month and I’m already posting them late. Procrastination has taken yet another victim.

With the Thanksgiving holiday and an unfortunate and violent encounter with my fist and the floor, November was fairly slow. While I was able to post a little more than October, we only had 23 posts this month. Not making excuses, but it is hard to type with a big splint wrapped around one of your hands.

Since my hand was broken, I did hardly any gaming. I played a little Pokemon on the DS and some old-school Tetris on my GBA-SP (the kids love to see the rocket take off when you score 100k+ in a game). The majority of my gaming took place over at Kongregate.com where I spent an unhealthy amount of time playing Onslaught2. Nat and I have been discussing how much we like that site. Maybe we’ll put up a post about it one of these days.

Nat got in more gaming than I did, playing Assassin’s Creed among other games. He also put up a great review of Stuntman Ignition for the 360.

So what posts got the most traffic this month? There wasn’t much change for the top posts from last month. Lots of people are still looking for Dead Rising’s Infinite Mode, MMORPG sports, Resident Evil 4 Translations and Halo 3 stats. So here’s a list of the top three posts for November:

3. November Releases
2. Broken Hand Update
1. Yeewouch

The broken hand heard around the bloggameosphere.

As always, people arrived here by way of some odd search terms. A few:

“is 9.68 more than 9.6?” – I weep for the current state of the American Schooling.

“button mashing is awesome” – I was thinking the same thing!

“bullet spam” – Some one must have been watching me play Halo 3!

“2007 orthopedic gadgets” – I break one bone and all of a sudden I’m a orthopedic gadget expert? I hope this person found what he was looking for, but I doubt it.

“bungie how come my stats don’t upload” – First of all, I’m Tony. Second, I have no idea. Try asking here.

“i’m very popular in the mmorpg community” – I’m not touching this one.

That’s November. So what about December? I’d really like to continue to increase my posting frequency. There is always something fun to talk about. I’m very much looking forward to the snow, the holidays (along with a nice long vacation to get some gaming in) and seeing family and friends. Hopefully I’ve been a good boy and Santa has a Wii for me somewhere in his bag of goodies.

He’s More Machine Now Than Man

November 21, 2007 by Tony 3 Comments

I am slowly realizing my life-long dream of becoming a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 — I now have a plate and six screws holding my fifth metacarpal together. Next up will be my nano-machine upgrades. I can’t wait for those. Then I’ll get my robotic exoskeleton. There will be no stopping me after that!

I’ll be heading out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday, but since I can’t disconnect completely, I’ll still be working on a few things:

  • I have a backlog of comments/email to reply to. If you’ve contacted me recently and I haven’t replied yet, I will! Promise!
  • I feel incomplete since I still haven’t played Mario Galaxy. Hopefully a guest post will be forthcoming from a friend who was in my cubicle yesterday, raving about how awesome it is. I can’t wait.
  • When I can finally get a grip on a 360 controller again, I’ll be putting Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect through their paces. I saw that Nat has been playing Assassin’s Creed, so hopefully he’ll give it a thumbs up.
  • Even though I haven’t played Halo 3 in a couple weeks, I can’t stop talking about it. The announcement of the new multiplayer maps is quite exciting. Hand, heal thyself!

I hope everyone has a good holiday weekend. There is plenty to be thankful for!

I was trying to reply to some of the recent comments on the site during lunch time, and I must have been doing them a little too fast, because I was greeted with this:

Sorry about that, WordPress. I thought you could keep up.

Excuse our dust

July 1, 2007 by Tony Leave a Comment

I’m currently upgrading all the WordPress sites I host to the newest version (2.2.1). I’m also working on a visual upgrade to the site as a whole. Please bear with the state of the site for the time being. I’m trying to do this at a non-peak buttonmashing.com time (as if there ever was one! It’s a non-stop party around here!) so hopefully this won’t affect many of you, but I just wanted you to know.

Knowing is half the battle, afterall.
