I love being right

January 5, 2006 by Tony 7 Comments

I picked Texas a month ago (I also picked Penn State by a field goal, but who’s keeping score? Of course, I also said OSU would win big and Ted Ginn Jr. would have a big game. Man, I need to be betting on these games!). I’ve been going back and forth with my brother-in-law about this game. He said USC by 14. I said no fricken way, Texas by 8. In the end, I took Texas and the points. Like I said, I love being right.

Oh, and let’s all welcome Matt Leinhart to the “Kellen Winslow Jr. Sore Loser Club.” After the Buckeyes beat Miami for the 2002 National Championship, Kellen Winslow Jr. said, “They didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves. We’re the best team in the country. They’re not. We just beat ourselves. We didn’t execute.” Leinhart told Holly Rowe, “I still think we’re the better team.” Welcome to the club, Matt.

Classy, the two of them.

Buckeye Blogging, Fiesta Bowl Edition (10-2)

January 2, 2006 by Tony 4 Comments

The Ohio State University Buckeyes – 34
Notre Dame Fighting Irish – 20

Troy Smith, proverbial pain-in-the-neck for the University of Michigan, just introduced Charle Weis and the rest of the Irish faithful (get it?) to Lloyd Carr’s reccuring nightmare. Single-handledly accounting for over 400 yards of offense, Smith shredded the Notre Dame defense with both his arm and his legs. He played like a man possesed. (A 2006 Heisman hopeful?) Notre Dame’s defense will also see Ted Ginn Jr.’s crazy legs in their sleep for the next eight months. Those moves he made on that 68-yard end-around were sick. Santonio Holmes may have played his last game as a Buckeye; talk about going out with a bang! And let’s not forget Antonio Pittman. That boy can run! OSU’s offense racked up 604 yards. That is insanity. They ran 66 plays. My handy-dandy calculator tells me that 9.15 yards a play. That is, as Brent Musberger so eloquently put it, was a Buckeye Butt-kicking.

Of course, there was the play of the stout OSU defense, which came to man-handle yet another team. Notre Dame certainly got off to a quick start but seemed to sputter the rest of the game. Throughout the game, the Notre Dame offense looked tight. They never looked comfortable. I was suprised with the number of dropped passes. Could that have been because of the tight leash Charlie Weis put on his players during the week? He called it a “business trip.” I don’t agree with that sentiment at all. Super Bowl trips in the NFL are business trips. College football bowl trips should be fun. Last time I checked, no one on either side of the football was receiving a paycheck after this game. That’s not to say Tressel let his boys party the whole time in Tempe, it just seemed like Weis was a little too strict.

Notre Dame just seemed overmatched. Their Brady Quinn-led offense never lived up to its billing. We knew their defense would struggle but we thought their offense would have put up a better fight than they did. Maybe OSU was too strong and a little faster. A.J. Hawk and Company may have been initially caught off-guard with that first drive but they buckled down and did a good job harassing Quinn all day along.

But in the end, it wasn’t OSU’s defense that won this game. It was Troy Smith. I’ll close by quoting a very prescient Charle Weis (speaking of Smith):

“He worries me the most of anyone on their team,” Weis said. “What scares me is any time you have a quarterback, and especially a quarterback who started out with a reputation of being a runner first and a thrower second, and now has reversed those roles, you have a problem.”

Yes, Virginia, there is a Laura Quinn

January 2, 2006 by Tony 7 Comments

Jiminy Christmas, people! Is this what you’re looking for?!

(*if you’re wondering what I’m talking about, I’ve had almost 2000 hits today from people looking for A.J. Hawk’s girlfriend, Ms. Quinn)

Every day should be Saturday has another picture and accompanying poll.

Buckeye Blogging, et cetera.

A few tidbits leading up to the Fiesta Bowl.

  • Notre Dame has not won a Bowl game in over ten years
  • Bobby Carpenter has been practicing (no contact) with the team but no decision has been made yet. I’d love to see him out there Monday, but not to the detriment of his NFL career. Hopefully he’ll make the right choice.
  • AJ Hawk is dating Brady Quinn’s older sister, Laura. Is Charlie Weis up to something? AJ Hawk is not attractive. Laura Quinn is. How did this happen?
  • OSU has the most All Academic Big Ten football players this year (18) in the conference. This is now the fourth straight year OSU has led the Big Ten. Four years? Jim Tressel started coaching the Buckeyes in 2001. 2002 would have been his freshmen recruiting class. Hmmm…
  • AJ Hawk is the National Defensive Player of the Year. Why did he not win the Butkus award again?

Update: Thanks to BM reader Bryan, I’ve added a link to Laura Quinn’s picture, which currently seems to be what everyone is looking for. I still stand by my assertion, though — compared to A.J., Laura is quite the looker.

Gaming in the news

December 10, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

Luckily this bit of gaming in the news does not include references to: Jack Thompson, violence, academic studies, or the shortage of Xbox 360s. No, our story today comes from my local newspaper, The Columbus Dispatch.

It’s a little article about an OSU gamer (you made need to register to view this) who made it to the final four in this year’s EA Sports NCAA Football Challenge at the ESPN Zone in New York.

Mark Stetson, an OSU freshman, made it to the final four of the championship before losing 35-38 to some nobody from Penn State (aren’t they all nobodies? I kid, I kid). Aside from being an OSU student, why am I bringing this up? Because Mark has made OSU proud. How?

Players could choose any college team; among the 16 finalists, only Stetson used his own school.

That’s how.

Buckeye Blogging, Bowl Selection Edition

December 4, 2005 by Tony 7 Comments

Who’s next?!

That’s right, sports fans, I will invoke Bill Goldberg. That’s basically what the Buckeyes are saying right now. Three of the past four Fiesta Bowls have featured the Buckeyes. It’s become their personal wood shed, where they take the opposition out to put the wood to. In 2004, the Buckeyes dismantled the cowboys of Oklahoma State Wildcats of Kansas State. 2003’s Fiesta Bowl was the best football game I have ever witnessed, EVER. This year’s bowl looks like it will be shaping up for another classic.

First I wanted to say I still think the BCS is a sham. How an 8-4 team can play in one of the four BCS bowls (arguably the four “best” bowl games) when Oregon, Auburn, and countless other teams with better records, that have beat better teams, and could probably beat Florida State. That being said, I was impressed with FSU against Va. Tech. I’ve said all along that VT was overrated and I was glad FSU beat them convincingly. Hopefully now we can officially get of the Vick bandwagon (Mike is an average NFL QB, Marcus won’t fare any better).

It’s clear that Texas and USC are the two best teams in the country. That much we already know. I’m still mulling over who I think wins that game. Right now I’m going with Texas, but that may change. I will say that if Reggie Bush doesn’t win the Heisman then I will have lost all faith in humanity. As for the other bowls – the Georgia/West Virginia Sugar Bowl doesn’t interest me. Georgia will win big. FSU/Penn State is intriguing mostly because of the coaches. If you would have asked me who would win this game last week, I wouldn’t hestitate saying Penn State would. After watching Florida State last night, I’m not so sure. This is a toss up. Penn State’s defense is tough and that’s what I think will be the difference. Penn State by a field goal.

So we come to the Fiest Bowl. I may be biased, but outside of the Rose Bowl, this bowl has the best matchup. Two storied programs, two teams one (or two) plays away from greatness. Notre Dame and wunderkind Brady Quinn are in for a shock. I think Quinn, being from Columbus, will have a big target on his back. I don’t think many fans are bitter he went to Notre Dame but the players may feel different. He’ll be harassed all day long by Hawk and Schlegel. OSU’s defense will dominate. I don’t think Notre Dame’s defense will be able to stop OSU’s offense. Troy Smith will play big and I predict that Ted Ginn Jr. will break something big. Maybe a punt, maybe a long pass. I think they will be more than Notre Dame can handle. Write it down – OSU wins big.

Fear the spear.

Buckeye Blogging, Week #12 (9-2)

November 20, 2005 by Tony 13 Comments

“Drive, drive on down the field, Men of the Scarlet and Gray!”

That’s exactly what Troy Smith and the Buckeyes did twice in the space of 6 minutes to overcome a 21-12 deficit. While Michigan played pretty good football for the first 54 minutes they didn’t step up when it mattered most. The Buckeyes defense was put in a number of sticky situations but held strong. That D is STOUT. It looked for a while like the Buckeyes were going to give another game away (see: Penn State) but Troy Smith rallied the troops. He’s easily the Buckeyes offensive MVP. And Mr. Clutch? He looks like this:

That’s clutch. Gonzales plays in the shadows of Ginn and Holmes all season but he comes through when he’s called on. He scored the first touchdown against Michigan last year and he broke their back again this year. Smith + Gonzales = Wolverine Killers.

It was a shame to see Bobby Carpenter go down in the first quarter to injury. He has been such a huge part of the D. Schlegel played his best game of the year and the Buckeyes shut down the over-rated Hart once again. What a game. Say hello to the 2005 Big Ten Champs.

So now we play the waiting game. I fully believe OSU will be going to a BCS game. I’d love to play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, as most people are predicting. Bring ’em on and watch ’em fall. I can’t wait.

Buckeye Blogging, Week #11 (8-2)

November 13, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

Choo choo! All aboard the Pittman Express! Now boarding for the State up North!

Nothing like a warm-up a week before the Buckeyes roll into Ann Arbor to play the team-that-shall-not-be-named. OSU played its last game at home against the Northwestern Wildcats. They looked like Wildcats for about the first 3 minutes of the game and looked liked something else the other 57. OSU never looked out of it, of course, but watching Basanez drive 80 yards for the first score was a little disconcerting. Of course, NW does have a top ranked offense but still! This is the Buckeyes! No one comes into our house and does that. And they paid the price.

I have been impressed with how much Troy Smith has improved. I’ve mentioned before that his throwing motion has always looked awkward to me. I’m not sure what it is but it’s never looked fluid to me. But he has really been making strides and I think he’s made a lot of progress. This offense is still relatively young so I’m pretty excited about not just this year but next year as well. Running for 300 yards is pretty impressive. Things are looking good for the Buckeyes as they prepare for you-know-who.

I mentioned to a guy at work how quickly this season has flown by. Buckeye fans (as well as other college football fans, I’m sure) go through phases of anticipation, thinking about football season. There’s thoughts of the next season right after whatever bowl game we’ve played in. Then there’s a big burst of activity during the high school all-star games and the OSU Spring Game. Interest wanes a bit during the summer, but about the beginning of August comes around, our minds quickly turn to the inevitable season. This year there was, more than most, a feeling that it could be The Year. While those hopes were dimmed after the Texas game, there was still hope. The flame burned out in Happy Valley and here we are now. Time has flown. Here’s to hoping we go out with a bang and end up in a BCS bowl. The season may not have gone how we hoped but it has still been exciting and the future looks bright.

A good DS golf game, please.

November 8, 2005 by Tony 1 Comment

The touchscreen for the Nintendo DS lends itself well for control of a golf game. Unfortunately, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005for the DS is a gigantic turd. The controls are atrociously unresponsive, the music grates on my ears and I derive little or no joy from the game, compared to really enjoying Tiger Woods 2005 on the Xbox.

Watch this movie for the new golf game on the DS called True Swing. Maybe Tiger Woods should be called “I’m trying a new swing” Golf. The use of the touchscreen looks a thousand times better than Tiger Wood’s interface. I swear Tiger Woods has some kind of random noise it injects into the control scheme to hose your shot, because I’ve never had two good shots in a row. True swing looks like it’s head and shoulders above TW. I can’t wait. The visuals look similar to the MMOG Shot-Online (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). There’s mention of downloading the game for mulitplayer, but I’m hoping for some online love. That would be the cherry on top.

You can see more screenshoots of True Swing at Kotaku.
