Guild Wars – The Single Player Experience

June 22, 2005 by Tony 38 Comments

Guild WarsOne of the original ideas I had for buttonmashing.com was a review site. As I settled on the idea of a gaming blog, the review idea sorta got shelved. Well, I did review NCAA 2005 a while a go, but that’s been the only review so far. With that in mind, I’d like to review some games. I’ve added a new category and everything. So, I present my review of the single player aspects of Guild Wars.

The review is after the jump.

Guild Wars

May 23, 2005 by Tony 7 Comments

Guild WarsI’ve been sucked into the black hole known as Guild Wars. I was able to avoid the World of Warcraft vortex but I couldn’t withstand the allure of no monthly fees. My MMOG running mate also took the plunge and we’ve really enjoyed it so far. We started characters and made the jump out of the “training” realm way too soon so we’ve started over with new alts and we’re roaring through all the quests and pretty much laying waste to anything that stands in our way. I’ve gone the way of the Grim Reaper acolyte, a Necromancer. I am still without a second profession so far, but I’m thinking of going with a Mesmer as my secondary profession. The skills are plentiful and I can see a lot of replay here. (This is a massive, of course).

And the game? Guild Wars is beautiful. The reviews are out there, you can read all about the beauty and immersiveness from other sources. But one thing is certain – sometimes you just have to take the scenery in. I am compelled to look around and stand in awe. The scale and wonder can be breathtaking.

But of course it’s more than just beauty and lush environments. The nuts and bolts under the hood really make this a fun game to play. This review says it better than I can.

But, instead, it’s easy to think about “Guild Wars” as a carefully researched and constructed product, one that combines the pixie dust of fantasy with the sawdust of a well-crafted game.

It is indeed a well-crafted game.

So I can see myself playing Guild Wars for the foreseeable future. The Gamecube and Xbox will be neglected and gather dust but them’s the breaks. I’ve got some monsters to kill and I don’t think I’ve even scratched surface of what the game has to offer.

Guild Wars is Mine!

May 17, 2005 by Tony 3 Comments

Guild WarsI suffered through Brian’s praise and Foton’s clumsy beginnings, salivating at my chance to play Guild Wars.

I then read Kieron’s review of Guild Wars at Eurogamer (which was excellent) and salivation continued.

Well a copy of this wonderful game is in my hands. And it is with much sadness that it will not be played tonight, as it is late and I am tired. MMOGs are not to be taken lightly and should not be started on a night that precedes a work day so I will resist. Tomorrow looks bleak, as well. But I will play.

Oh yes, I will.

The Dome of York…

May 3, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

I still feel a twinge of nostalgia when I think of Neocron. It could have been so much more than it ever was. It sports my favorite crafting system — being a constructor, building that 5-slot uber-pistol was sweet. But alas, my friend and I turned our backs on that game months ago and haven’t looked back. But I’ve wanted to know what ever became of the expansion/sequel “The Dome of York”. Well I didn’t have to look any further than Van Hemlock (a new addition to the blogroll) for his review. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like I’m missing much. It looks like more of the same. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing with Neocron, I think I’ll be passing on Neocron 2. If you’re interested, read Van Hemlocks review of The Dome of York…

Mutually Assured Destruction: Corante > Got Game? >

April 4, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

Mutually Assured Destruction: Corante > Got Game? >

Everquest, it appears, still has a thing or two to teach us about online worlds.

This is a great read by Andrew Phelps about the eminent merger of EQ servers. Very well thought out and welll written. While playing Neocron, I often wished they would merge servers since there were about 400 players on average per server. On a Friday night the most populated server (the one I played on, the Saturn Server) would only have about 800 players. I wanted a merger of all the servers but after reading this it could have been a bad idea, moreso with a smaller number of players.

MMOG players are a fickle bunch.

EverQuest II – /pizza

February 18, 2005 by Tony 2 Comments

EverQuest II – /pizza – At first I thought Jason at loonyblog was kidding. Then I actually followed the link.

Ever get those nasty hunger pains playing EverQuest II?

You’re in luck – pizza is just a few key strokes away! While playing EverQuest II just type /pizza and a web browser will launch the online ordering section of pizzahut.com. Fill in your info and just kick back until fresh pizza is delivered straight to your door.

Now I will admit I’ve used pizzahut.com to order pizza before, but this is just crazy-talk. Do I ever get those nasty hunger pains? Heck yes, I do. But I think I’ll just satisfy them the old fashion way – by leaving my computer and making myself a dang quesadilla.

(BTW, shouldn’t that be “hunger pangs”? Or are they assuming you’ve been playing EQII so much that you’ve ignored the initial hunger pangs and now the sides of your stomach are scraping together, causing actual, physical pain? Something to think about)

Guild Wars and the MMORPG

October 29, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

Well, as I said earlier, I was done with MMOGs for a while. I enjoy them but I just can’t justify the time I would want to put into them. But I saw a post on Tales of a Scorched Earth (great name for a gaming site, by the way) about Guild Wars, another fantasy entry into the MMORPG world. I had heard mention of GW among the EQ2 and WoW chatter but never paid much attention to it. But, since they are talking about zero subscription fees, I was interested. I downloaded the free client last night and gave it a test drive.

I took on the role of a ranger (character generation wasn’t very customizable, hopefully they’ll add more content there with the full game) and gave the game a go. I will say right off the graphics look fabuolous, run smoothly on my PC and everything looks great. It’s been compared to a Diablo 2 MMORPG. That’s a fair comparison, but a D2 MMORPG would have been a killer app. We played too much D2. I made money selling D2 items. We were D2 addicts. I would have paid for an MMORPG version, no questions asked. Building a house on the Outer Steppes for my Necromancer would have been sweet. Anyway, back to Guild Wars. It played okay, your basic point and click, but it wasn’t doing it for me. I was having conflicting responses. Part of me felt like it was a chore to click on yet another monster. The other part of me couldn’t stop thinking about the lure and curse of MMOGs – just one more level and I can do/use/be X. It’s video game smack. You think you can stop cold turkey, but you’re just deluding yourself. You’ll be back. So I decided to stop after an hour or so, preventing the needle from getting too close to the vein.

So I may not be the most reliable source for impressions of the game, but I’m not going back to have a second look. I’ll be content knowing I may be missing gaming excellence but I’ve staved off addiction for the time being.

Neocron 2 Open Beta

September 14, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I’ve participated in a few open betas, most recently I played Planetside (which was okay but not worth picking up). So when I saw Neocron 2 was holding one I decided to give the game another chance. Maybe. My Neocron character, “I ain’t yer Pa,” is currently in a cryo-genic holding pattern since I cancelled my account last month. I figured I’d give Dome of York a chance, and now with an open beta I may just find out. If Neocron 2 is any good he may come out from his slumber.

I was a little confused, though, because I thought Dome of York was an expansion, not a new game, so I’m interested to see how that plays out. I’m currently Bit Torrenting my copy, but since this isn’t the WoW Stress Beta there aren’t too many seeds out there, resulting in a SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW download. I probably won’t get around to it until tomorrow.

That presents a second conundrum. Fable is available tomorrow, too. I’ll give both a chance but since I’ll be paying for Fable I expect it will take more of my time off the bat. We’ll go from there.

Saying goodbye to Neocron

July 7, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

Alas, the time has come to close the Neocron account. It has been a fun ride and quite a good game to play, I just don’t have the time to invest in it right now. I may pick it up again when the Dome of York expansion comes out, but for now I am going to say goodbye. I have definitely played my money’s worth (I picked it up for 4.99$ at CompUSA) so even after a few months of paying the monthly fees it still ends up being less than the full price for a new game.

Overall, my experience with MMORPGs has been positive. I played Everquest for a month but lost all my items in some forest somewhere and never logged back on. I played a ton of Diablo 2 (not really an MMORPG, but who cares) and had a good group of guys to run around with so we good avoid the lusers on battle.net. Unfortunately our group slowly dwindled to just two of us (me and Bob). I played in the Planetside beta, that was okay but not my thing. After picking up Neocron I really got hooked. I really liked the crafting system (I have a high level constructor that has made some sweet stuff) and I liked the dependence on other players, but in the end it slowly degraded into the dreaded level treadmill. “…I just need one more level to use that new weapon…” I will say that the leveling system and skill points scheme is done well in Neocron. Since there weren’t a ton of players (300 players on Saturn would be crowded) most of the people were cool to play with but of course NC had its share of PK’ers and that just sucks. I’m not leaving because of that but they won’t be missed.

I’m quitting for a number of reasons, but mostly because NCAA 2005 is a week away and I will be deeply engrossed in that for a while. After that, we’ll see. I still have to have a chat with Greta about that monitor I want and maybe an XBox.

A gaming crossroads

June 18, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I stand at a fork in the proverbial road of video games. Of the current console systems, I only own a Gamecube and a Game Boy Advance SP . I have a fairly good PC which can handle any of the current games out there. But I don’t play many PC games, the only one I’m playing right now is the MMORPG Neocron. I’ve enjoyed this game so far (you can read my review here) but I could easily walk away from it tonight and not miss it. So I’m at a crossroads. Do I continue playing Neocron and when World of Warcraft comes out, play that, or try and talk Greta into letting me get an XBox and get Live. I don’t know yet.

We shall continue to ponder our next move.
