They Played Diablo III…

May 3, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

From Yannick LeJacq at Kill Screen:

Horror is often an art of framing, so it’s hard to scare a viewer from the bird’s eye perspective of Diablo. The original did this with the flat nihilism of its atmosphere—the world was a bleak vision of black and gray, given the luminous color of life only briefly and terribly when blood was split. Killing yet another round of grotesque and bilious undead, my mind started to wander. Were these bloated and farting corpses really that evil? This was more like Shawn of the Dead than 28 Days Later. Then, I heard a noise.

I can’t wait to hear that noise.

Read the whole thing.

Weekend Gaming

April 13, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

As quickly as the last one ended, the weekend is upon us once again! It’s time to get in some gaming!

Me personally, I have Mass Effect 3 mulitplayer on the brain. I think a large portion of my time this weekend will be spent playing that. If there’s time to get back to the single player game, that’s where I’ll be. But as much fun as I’ve been having with the multiplayer, I don’t see there being much extra time. If I get some PC time, it will probably be spent playing Vindictus or Atlantica. And possibly checking out Dragon’s Nest. But it will most likely be Mass Effect 3.

Which brings me to a moment of reflection, a confession if you will. Up to this point, I have never paid “real money” for in-game items I can “earn” through regular playing. I get the idea of microtransactions in online games (and actually welcome them) but I have always limited my purchases to things that couldn’t be gotten through normal play of the game. Things like extra character slots, extra storage space and the like. But the ME3 “booster packs” have their hooks into me big time and it’s real tempting to drop some Microsoft Space Bucks on that Premium Spectre Pack instead of putting in the time to earn those 99,000 credits.

REAL tempting.

So I’ll br trying to resist the temptation of instant gratification. What will you be playing?

In My Hands

March 27, 2012 by Tony 6 Comments

It’s actually been “in my hands” since last Thursday, but real life conspired against me and the first real time I’ve had with Mass Effect 3 was last night. Looking forward to getting back to it tonight!

In My Hands

March 12, 2012 by Tony 1 Comment

Actually, on my ears:

Ear Force X41

These things are pretty amazing. I’m personally not really an audiophile, but I do pride myself on thinking I can at least discern the difference between stereo sound pumped through my television’s speakers and some high quality (even if it’s simulated) Dolby Surround Sound. And these boys do that in spades.

I’m playing Skyrim with a whole new outlook on the game. The ambient sounds are incredibly detailed and the crescendos of the battle theme during a fight with a dragon are a treat. I sometimes just sit and listen as the title track plays. It sounds so rich.

I’ve heard that multiplayer chat is also greatly enhanced with these headsets but I have yet to put that to the test. I hope to get some Borderlands in this week and I’ll be able to report on the validity of those claims.

The first preorder bonus I’m considering

February 24, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

Heck, I didn’t even think the original Prototype was that great of a game. I have no plans of buying or playing Prototype 2. Butt after receiving an email from Gamestop, alerting me to their pre-order bonus for Prototype 2, I am seriously considering it.

I’m not a fan of different retail outlets offering bonuses for pre-ordering/purchasing a game from their establishment (Batman: Arkham City being a particularly egregious example) but since it usually doesn’t affect the gameplay in any measureable way and doesn’t prevent me from enjoying the full experience, I don’t really care. If it floats your boat, by all means, go for it.

BUT. BUTT. But, when you offer something like this, well I’ll definitely take notice:

When you offer me the Bio-Bomb Butt Kicker, well you may have just made a sale.
