Carnival of Gamers #20 coming soon

December 4, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

There’s only a few days left to get your submissions in to Michael for the December Carnival. Don’t pass up the opportunity to achieve blogging fame and fortune!

Or at least fame. The fortune thing hasn’t really happened to any Carnival participants yet.

Iron Mike at his best

November 28, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

From the underrated sports site, Joe Sports Fan, I present for you entertainment: Iron Mike’s Real Legacy, a look at Mike Tyson’s finest hour: Super Punch-Out for the SNES. It’s hilarious. Read the whole thing. Talking about King Hippo:

Hippo was a cross between Sloth Fratelli and George “the Animal” Steele, a massive, somewhat retarded beast that lacked the skills to stick with the polished Mac.

Anyone who can include references to the Goonies and classic WWF wrestlers in the same sentence is okay in my book.

Hacking the Wii giftcard

November 15, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

Target is handing out Wii GiftCards in anticipation of Nintendo’s release of this remarkable console. The cards are a bit thicker than your regular credit card and house some pretty nifty electronics. Pressing the button on the outside of the card turns on a ominous blue Wii glow that lasts about ten seconds. I’ll pop the case on this little thing and check out the internals. After that we’ll add a bit of functionality to the LEDs.

Blogging update

November 13, 2006 by Tony 4 Comments

If you’re a sports fan (more specifically a college football fan), you’re aware of a little game this weekend (just look at the countdown in the middle of this page. It’s been there for over a month.). That’s right, the Ohio State versus Michigan game is HUGE. HUGE is actually the understatement of the century. This game is going to be HUGER than HUGE. It’s something that’s never happened — an undefeated Ohio State team ranked #1 in the country playing an undefeated Michigan team ranked #2. It’s basically a mini-National Championship, a prelude to the BCS Title game in Glendale.

So I’ll be busy this week blogging at my other site, Men of the Scarlet and Gray. We’ve got a lot of content this week that will be taking up my time. We’ll also be participating in CSTV.com’s Battle of the Blogs. Our piece will be up on Thursday.

So I’ll try to keep the posting here, too, but it may be too much. This week is just chock-full of stuff going on. The game on Saturday, the release of the Wii six hours later and this football geek’s head is going to explode. It’s gonna be sweet.

I’ve got some Carnival updates coming soon, too. Unfortunately our December host dropped out but Michael at MMOGNation (Zonk from Slashdot Games) has agreed to take over the hosting duties for December. You can get your submissions in whenever you’re ready. I’ve updated the Carnival HQ page to reflect the changes.

So I’m excited about this week. I’m excited about the Wii. I’m excited about “The Game.” It’s Ohio State/Michigan. It doesn’t get any bigger than that.

And if you’re wondering, I don’t really care much about the state of Michigan.

Back on track.

November 6, 2006 by Tony 2 Comments

I’m back from spending a nice weekend at my parent’s house, mostly unplugged. I didn’t touch my feeds or emails all weekend long. It was great. My sister’s wedding was nice, too. Spending time with family is always good.

Now that things are starting to ramp up, video game wise, I’m getting ready for things to get busy around the game-o-sphere, and here at buttonmashing.com in particular.

I’ve got some impressions for Contact, Ouendan, and other games I started talking about but never followed up with.

Then a look at the upcoming avalanche of games and systems. That whipering sound you hear is my wallet, in the corner, balled up in the fetal position and quietly sobbing.

I’m also still working on a review of a bunch of video game-related podcasts. Hopefully that will be done soon, as the Wii/PS3 release will probably dominate things for foreseeable future.

The next two months look extremely exciting.

Gamemaster: Will Wright

October 31, 2006 by Tony 3 Comments

An excellent (and long) article about Will Wright at the New Yorker.

I’ve played a lot of games. A lot. But I think Sim City and Sim City 2000 consumed more of my gaming time than any other game I’ve played. I’ve avoided picking up any of the other Sim City games out of fear for my sanity. Spore looks like it could be another soul-destroyer. I’m finding it hard to resist.

Carnival of Gamers, right around the corner.

October 26, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

Man, it seems like I just finished reading last month’s Carnival when the next one is almost upon us! I blink a couple times and boom, Jason’s ready to take over as November’s Carnival Host. The carnie emails are on their way, Jason, I promise!

Head over the HQ for submission questions.

This is some cool stuff

October 19, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

I know I’m late to the game-o-sphere with this one, but it’s too amazing to not post. Be sure and check out the video, too:

The boy, a 14-year-old who suffers from epilepsy, is the first teenager to play a two-dimensional video game, Space Invaders, using only the signals from his brain to make movements.

Someone forgot to tighten the levels

October 17, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

Via Matt from PTB, it looks like the new Bubble Bobble game for the DS has shipped with a game-crippling error — there’s no level 30 boss. So ya, all those hundred levels you paid for? You ain’t seeing the last 70.

Opps. I’m sure Nintendo will make things all better, but this is pretty embarassing.

There’s a video of the “glitch” at Go Nintendo.

Work in progress

September 30, 2006 by Tony 3 Comments

Over the weekend, I’ll be working on my To-Do List I mentioned a couple weeks ago. Most recently, I’ve added a Contact Page, with a form to contact me directly, along with my Instant Messenger screen names and my email address. If you’ve got a tip, question, complaint, anything, feel free to drop me a line however you like.

I’m also using this plugin to set up all the different feeds I have to point to my FeedBurner feed. For those of you that read Buttonmashing through an RSS reader, this shouldn’t cause any issues but it will give me a chance to have a better idea of who’s reading the site through my feeds. Let me know if this causes anyone a problem.

Other changes will be occuring (mostly behind the scenes) but hopefully nothing will get garbled or wonky while I do my tweaking.

Update: I noticed after installing the plugin that the feed spit out like 20 of my latest entries (including my del.icio.us links and Flickr pictures). Hopefully that didn’t cause any problems or confusion.
