Symphonia? Can someone tell me what that means?

November 4, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I had a free rental to burn before November, so I picked up Tales of Symphonia. I’m still not sure what a Symphonia is, but I’m playing it nonetheless. It’s not too shabby.

It looks beautiful but the beauty seems superficial. It’s beautful nonetheless. I like the look and feel of the characters, it’s got the Viewtiful Joe feel, the anime flair is well done. The battle system is a lot fun, it’s a mixture of real-time and semi-turn based battle. To pull off combos you have to be a proficient button-masher, for which I certainly qualify and I’ve been proficient at combos from the beginning.

Unfortuntely it isn’t perfect. The story line is extremely wooden. So is the voice acting. Most of the Japanese RPG cliches are there, but that’s not too much of a problem for me. But the story is so lame, I often struggle with it’s cheese. But seeing past that, this is definitely a good game. I don’t think I’ll be able to finish it, though, as I think a good game will be in my hands Tuesday morning at 12:01am and I’ll be pretty busy with that. Oh well, hopefully I can get back to it sometime in the future.

Paper Mario Reviews

October 12, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

Gamespot gives Paper Mario 2 a great review, as do IGN and Gamespy (surpising, IGN and Gamespy give the same game high marks?). This is good news. I posted earlier on EvilAvatar (I’m not linking to the article, since the comments degenerated into fanboy rants that I abhor) that I was getting pessimistic about Nintendo’s outlook, but my outlook has changed.

I really think the next 2-3 months (read: Holiday Season) are going to be great for Nintendo. The DS is starting to turn a lot of heads and should put up a good fight against Sony’s PSP. Metroid Prime 2 should be stellar, along with a bunch of other games. Seeing Paper Mario get a good review is great, I really think this is what is going to get the ball rolling for Nintendo. Good for them! It does my heart good.

Lets play some games!

October 7, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I haven’t had much time to play many games this week, I played a little Fable Wednesday night and some Advance Wars last night (I finaly beat FF:TA!) so I’m looking forward to a little gaming. That should happen this weekend.

Finally, I’ll get some time to play some video games this weekend! We’re going to the in-laws house this weekend, to visit with Greta’s older brother and his family. Same guy we visited out west last month, so there will definitely be a lot of NCAA 2005. Her other brother will be there, too, so we’ll have some 3 players vs. the CPU. It’s always good fun. The girls will want to get in on the gaming, too, so we’ll play some Mario Kart and some Pac Man Vs. Should be a good weekend.

ESPN NFL 2K5 vs. NCAA 2005

August 31, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

Since I don’t have Madden 2005 and I haven’t played it yet, I thought I’d compare my experience with the two football games I do have. I know I’m not technically comparing apples to apples, but it’s close enough. It’s Fuji Apples vs. Granny Smiths. Or something like that.

B00020V4RG.01._AA_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpgFirst and foremost, the graphics, animations, and presentation aren’t even close. ESPN looks pretty darn good. There are times that the players look a tad “squatty” but it’s not too bad. I am amazed at how nice it really looks, screen shots don’t do it justice. It has made me much more disappointed with NCAA’s graphics. It’s just no contest. It makes NCAA look old.

Control and feel are both still solid. I am still getting the hang of ESPN’s controls but NCAA’s are second nature to me. The feel is pretty wierd to get used to. NCAA seems more responsive, ESPN is loose and touchy. Passing in ESPN is an exercise in frustration at times.
B0002IJY2U.01-A1AJVWO2HMT2XY._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpegComputer opponents are better in ESPN and there’s the VIP which is a profile of how you play the game and you can use it to play against, well, yourself. Sounds cool, I want to let it learn more of how I play before I try it.

Environment or atmosphere is definitely NCAA’s domain. It really does capture the feel of a college football game. ESPN looks prettier (NCAA’s crowds look like burn victims) but I like NCAA’s overall atmosphere.

I haven’t delved into ESPN’s franchise mode yet but I think NCAA will edge it out. Dynasty mode, with its awesome recruiting aspect, will be nearly impossible to beat.

There’s more to it than just this, but that’s my five minute take on it. I’m sure I’ll revisit this topic some more in the future.

I still haven’t won a game yet with my Brownies. The Lions and Seahawks have both beat me by a field goal.

Gamecube’s Fall Lineup and new peripheral

August 26, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

Over at PlanetGamecube.com they’ve got a list of up coming games this fall/winter for both the Gamecube and the GBA. I’m looking forward to (in no particular order): Paper Mario 2, Metroid Prime 2, Viewtiful Joe 2, and Mario Tennis. I’ll probably pick up NFSU 2 for the Xbox.

They’ve also got news concerning the new “controller” for Mario Party 6: a microphone. This could be good or this could be lame. I don’t do karaoke but I can scream with the best of them. Maybe some voice recognition to see who could imitate Mario saying “Itsa me, Mario!”

Hope springs eternal

August 17, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

Every once and a while, an article like this (via IGN) catches my eye and my heart at the same time. Getting my Gamecube online is defintely something I have been hoping for for a while, but so far no luck. So I read the article, hoping for a glimmer of hope, and all I get is:

Unfortunately, Nintendo filed the patent in question for the ill-fated 64DD and not for the GameCube. The 64DD was meant to add mass storage capabilities to the N64, but it never caught on.

Blasted! Oh well, hope does spring eternal.

Resident Evil 4 in 2005

August 3, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I guess I spoke too soon on games I’m looking forward to this coming fall/winter. According to Gamespot (via EvilAvatar) it will ship Jan. 11, 2005.

From what I’ve seen, it looks spectacular. I didn’t play any of the RE games until I tried the RE remake on the GC and it was great, but I didn’t finish it. I’ve been wanting to go and play through the series so I could see how everything fits together and now that RE4 has been delayed, maybe I’ll actually be able to do that.

Games of 2004

August 2, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I, like most people, like to make top ten/five/whatever lists. Top ten movies of all time, top ten fight scenes, whatever. I made a top five Gamecube games of 2003 last year on epinions.com. I was thinking of games (Gamecube in particular) of 2004 and which one’s I’ve enjoyed so far and I’ve only played a couple games released this year. While there are a bunch of games I am looking forward to, I still can’t believe I’ve only played two games released in 2004: Wario Ware Megagames and NCAA 2005.

There are some good ones that are out already that I should play: Zelda Four Swords Adventures, Mega Man Anniversary, Spiderman 2, and Tales of Symphonia. Those are some good titles.

But the upcoming games are looking great. I am particularly looking forward to Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, and Pikmin 2. These will be the titles vying the top five of 2004. There’s also a handful of Xbox games I’m looking forward to playing, but that’s another topic.

More 2005

July 23, 2004 by Tony Leave a Comment

I just saw a new one to add to the “User” stats: I used the stiff arm during a run and my RB pushed the defender down and up popped “User Break Tackle!”.

That’s pretty cool stuff. Are there others? I hope so. If you’ve encountered one, let me know!
