They announced the DSi earlier today at it’s Fall presentation.
From what I’ve been able to gather:
- It’s 12% thinner
- It’s $178 (Sorry, Japan only right now)
- It has a camera
- It’s not replacing the DS Lite
- It has an SD slot, but no GBA slot
- It has internal storage and plays music
- It has bigger screens
- It is awesome
My DS Lite is currently going on the fritz. However, it’s too bad this does not look to be released in the States until after Christmas. It would have been the toy of the season. While cool, I think Nintendo is shooting themselves by not releasing it here at the same time.

Agreed. My DS has a slight crack on one hinge and I noticed during Time Hollow that it is starting to hang a bit during certain things. I’m not sure if it’s the game or the console, but my DS has definately seen better days.
That said, I wish it still had the GBA slot. I have a tonne of GBA games that I still play on occasion (I’m looking at you, FFVI Advance) and there’s the Rumble Pack as well.
Oh well.

Wow. And here I thought that the DS was doing awesome in sales, why make another one? I guess they needed to come out with something to counter the newer PSP’s.
I must say though that I was looking forward to the new DS being made on par with the PSP’s capabilities. But then again it would just be a PSP at that point. Hopefully this doesn’t take too much longer after the release in Japan to come state side.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/dsi.html this site that Tony linked to me is sweet. (It’s in Japanese, but still) If you go into the main page and click on the link on the bottom right there is an awesome comparison between the DSi and the DS lite

You can play games right off the SD card. I don’t think GBA games will be going away.
We’ll just pay for them again.

I’m not saying this is as good as an iPhone, but I’m feeling a little better I didn’t pick one up earlier this summer. A browser and an online store sounds good to me. SD storage is nice, as well.

You all do realize that there’s no region coding on handheld systems rights? You can just import one from Asia if you can’t wait… I think that’s what I’m going to do.

@ Eko – Wouldn’t the menus and such be in Japanese?
