Cheap Game of the Week – History Channel Civil War: A Nation Divided

October 8, 2009 by Jason O 4 Comments

Overview: A rare first person shooter set in the American Civil War

Pricing: About $20 new or used.

Rip-Off Warning: Can occassionally be found for $30 new.

Platform: Playstation 2, Windows, XBox 360 (Reviewed)

Is it worth it? There aren’t many first person shooters set in the American Civil War. While there have definitely been some liberties taken with historical accuracy and weapon reloading has been tweaked somewhat, the game stands in rare company. A lever action rifle feels like an assault rifle in this game and learning melee combat is a must.

The game does have some issues. The level design is full of invisible walls and is practically on rails, there are only 6 missions per each side, and the graphics are just barely servicable. Yet I found myself enjoying this game and the unique challenges it often presented the player. The game is not particularly hard, but the play style is different from standard run and gun.

Some quibbles with the game. Iron sights were worthless since you were better off just looking at the cross hair and waiting for it to turn red. Also, taking cover didn’t seem to work very well. Not that the game had a cover system, but enemies standing close to a solid object seemed to become bullet proof while I could hide behind a wall and still take damage.

Final Judgement: I just don’t have much to say about this one. It’s an enjoyable if somewhat short play experience that will definitely give you something different. It was a solid PURCHASE for me and highly recommended if you’re looking for a budget title.

Conventioneers

October 6, 2009 by Tony Leave a Comment

I’m not what you would call a “Comic Book Enthusiast” (read: NERD). People are trying to turn me into one but I’m not there yet. I don’t have the breadth of knowledge most comic book fans have. I’m not even sure I want to. I know I can’t afford another hobby, that’s for sure. I do know enough to be dangerous, however, and I do have my favorite characters, but the stories and histories are foreign to me. I’ve never fully immersed myself in the world but as I geek I feel a camaraderie with comic book fans and I respect them for their dedication. James, my bro-in-law and fellow blogger, is a comic book nerd of the highest order (with all due respect). So we decided to head to the yearly comic convention here in Central Ohio, the “Mid-Ohio Con“.

This was the first “con” for both of us. I think we had an inkling of what to expect, having read about conventions like the San Diego Comic Con or the New York Comic Con and seen the pictures online, but we weren’t sure exactly what to expect. Here are a few pictures recapping our trip (A complete set of these images can all be found on Flickr.).

(Note: I felt somewhat awkward asking people to pose for pictures. Most of these were snapped when other people were busy asking for poses.)

Most of these photos are of the crowd, of the cos-players (a sub genre of comic book fans that amaze me).

The first up was the gathering of Ghostbusters. This seemed to be the most popular costume of the convention. I was under the impression there were four (five if you count Tully) but there were quite a few more than that in Columbus last weekend:

Ghostbusters

I think these two Predator costumes were the Best in Show for James and I. Both were extremely detailed (the masked Predator even had the three-laser sight, which was extremely cool). They even scared the kids. That brightened my cold, dead heart. GET TO DA CHOPPA!

Two Predators

Of course, no convention is complete without Darth Vader and his cadre of Storm Troopers and MOC had its Vader. Here he’s talking to Boba Fett with his helmet off. This Fett costume was actually very well done.

Vader and his entourage

Speaking of Boba Fett, one of the “celebrities” at this year’s MOC was Daniel Logan, the child actor who played the young Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones. It was actually kind of cool to see him there and being able to instantly recognize who he was. He seemed like a nice guy who was clinging to whatever was left of his fifteen minutes.

The highlight for me was meeting James Kyson Lee (AKA Ando Masahashi on Heroes). I haven’t been following Heroes as closely as I did the first few seasons, but all along Ando has been my favorite character, and it was pretty cool meeting him and snapping this picture (and professing my undying love to him):

Me and Ando

So, all in all, it was well worth the price of admission. I’m sure James could do a better report of which “Comic Book Celebrities” there were, but I was fascinated by the dedication of the fans, the talent of the artists on display and the general feeling of acceptance that permeated the show. I don’t know if I’d go back again, but it was definitely an experience.

(As a bonus, here’s my four year-old son with the Spiderman mask we brought him):

2 Minute Review – Professor Layton & The Diabolical Box

October 1, 2009 by Brock Leave a Comment

Diabolical Box Art

The Professor and Luke are up to their wacky hijinks again!

Do: Unravel a mystery while solving close to 150 different logic puzzles.

Type: Puzzle/Adventure

Platform: Nintendo DS

Price: $29.99

PL2 Story Screen

Meat: As the sequel to last year’s puzzle/adventure game for the DS, Professor Layton & The Curious Village, Professor Layton & The Diabolical Box comes with some high expectations. You are tasked with guiding the titular Professor and his plucky assistant Luke through a rather substantial tale of murder, theft and intrigue as they attempt to find the Elysian Box, an artifact that kills any who dare open it. This is done by solving upwards of 130 different logic puzzles scattered throughout the tale. Some puzzles are random while some are integral to moving the story forward. Add to that a much larger variety of minigames and you are looking at a game that takes about 12 hours to playthrough with plenty of extra goodies to keep you coming back for more.

PL2 Puzzle Screen

Perks: The art design and music are a slice of whimsy and exotic flair in a world of games filled with too much gritty darkness. While the subject matter in Professor Layton & The Diabolical Box can be quite grim, there is always a sense of innocence about the proceedings. The puzzles in Diabolical Box are integrated into their surroundings much better than they were in the first game, with at least a hint of context given for each offering. Animated cutscenes are sprinkled liberally through the game and are a delight to watch. There has also been an improvement in the localization of the text clues for the word puzzles over the first game, which is a huge plus.

Screams: For a stronger resolution to the core plot. The game spends a lot of time weaving together several plot threads but then seems to rush the ending. The finale is still satisfying but the twists do seem to come out of nowhere and are resolved far too quickly for my taste.

Verdict: Buy. This is the middle game in a trilogy but the story is very self-contained with most of the allusions to the events of the first Layton game summed up nicely.

Cheap Game of the Week – Guitar Hero: Aerosmith

October 1, 2009 by Jason O Leave a Comment

Overview: The title says it all, Guitar Hero + Aerosmith.

Pricing: This one has dropped pretty fast. $15 used seems to be the standard and new copies go for $20. The version with the guitar even dropped to $50 or less, which is ridiculously cheap if you don’t already have the controller.

Rip-Off Warning: Not much danger here. All the Guitar Hero games except for Metallica, Smash Hits, and 5 seem to be dropping in price steadily. Look around and you might see the occasional $25 or 30 price.

Platform: Playstation 2, Playstation 3, XBox 360 (Reviewed), Wii

Is it worth it? This might be my cheap game of the week, but I actually purchased this brand-spanking new with a guitar controller and everything for $100. The release was just a perfect storm of having recently discovered the music rhythm genre, needing a second 360 compatible controller, and actually being an Aerosmith fan. How’s that for a disclaimer?

Unfortunately, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was the sophmore effort for Neversoft who released the incredibly well selling but widely criticized Guitar Hero III after Harmonix went off to make Rock Band. The primary criticisms of Guitar Hero III was imprecise note charts, high degree of difficulty, and the ridiculous “boss battles” that they introduced. Instead of the fun, casual, social gaming experience that previous Guitar Hero games had been, Neversoft had seemingly adopted their usual “2 HARDKOR 4 U” mentality of the Tony Hawk series.

While they claimed to have listened to criticisms, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith feels like one of those non-apologies that are quickly followed by a middle finger when your back is turned. The difficulty isn’t quite as bad, but still ramps up rather quickly about mid-game. They retained one boss battle and made it skippable. That just smacks of a stubborn refusal to learn their lesson while also acknowledging that maybe it wasn’t the best idea. As for the note charts, my favorite quote about GH: Aerosmith was “Neversoft continues to display complete ignorance for the mechanical workings of a guitar or even a human hand”.

Other issues is that the game is incredibly short and there are many other songs you have to play through before getting to each Aerosmith set. That’s too bad because if you’re an Aerosmith fan it’s a pretty good song list, but if you’re not a fan then there is no point to this game. Adding other bands that “inspired” or where “inspired by” Aerosmith is just a lame attempt to pull in people who aren’t familiar with their music.

Final Judgement: This is a PASS. If you’re an existing Aerosmith fan you may enjoy it, but otherwise it’s going to feel like a waste of time and money to most anyone else.
