Halo:Reach

March 22, 2010 by James 9 Comments

I just wanted to see what those of you out there think about Halo:Reach. I just read some info regarding the Arena and the matchmaking/social aspect of the game. I also watched the multiplayer trailer again, saw this awesome concept art, and I have to tell you, I am starting to get even more interested. Anyone else?

I hear it’s essentially Tribes with a Halo paint job. Pass ๐Ÿ™‚

They aren’t fixing the ranking system, which made Halo 3 all but unplayable in team games when you had quitters everywhere.

Sorry, pass. At least on Day 1. I’m not paying $60 for another 8 hour single-player shooter.

Luckily my rank doesn’t really matter to me in any game (just look at my terrible MW2 record), so them not changing the ranking system from what is used in Halo 3 doesn’t bother me too much. However, I do recall reading that the Arena mode will change the way Halo 3 ranks, so that quitters will not have a negative affect on your rank. That seems to be their more “hardcore” mode (as Bungie put it).

I don’t see why you see Halo as a single-player shooter Jason. Both Halo 3 and ODST offered a four-player coop campaign mode. As much fun as I had with both of those games alone, it was far more satisfying in a group.

Brock, I haven’t read anything that suggests that the jump jets are that integral to the multiplayer mode. I thought it was just a single mode, or perhaps a perk you can select for particular loadouts. I don’t believe it is part of the core experience like it is in Tribes or Section 8. Have I missed any important coverage?

I’ll be in the Multiplayer Beta when it hits in May. Will you be there James?

@Will – I actually don’t have ODST so I won’t be in the beta. I’m diggin’ the different spartans (scout/runner, sniper, heavy weapons, assault, etc.) and I hope that the single player/multiplayer can effectively use those differences in a fun way.

@Brock – I would be interested in it too, Tribes 2 was awesome in my book (well, maybe it was because it was the first game that I played that used mods).

@Jason – I don’t feel like it’ll be a day one purchase as of yet. I need to see some more or try the beta (tony, wink ; ) wink) before I will decide on that. I don’t think I’ve followed the single-player story/Halo storyline at all so I’m not too worried about it. I do hope that they add more story to this game though, I wouldn’t mind getting into it though.

Technically, quitters don’t affect your rank now. The real problem was that it becomes impossibly one-sided in team games when you have half your team quit because they’re not dominating the match.

That’s frustrating whether you care about rank or not. A lot of my success or failure in Halo 3 multiplayer depended on whether or not I was on a team that stuck with the whole match. That’s not exactly fun for me, because when we won it was usually due to have a 2 to 1 advantage. Vice versa for losing.

I am just going by what little I’ve heard on a couple of podcasts. I have zero interest in the game as it is, so I could easily be horribly wrong ๐Ÿ™‚

And I’m not dogging on the game for being like Halo meets Tribes. Hell, that would actually make me somewhat more interested in the game.

I’ll be checking out the beta (hint, hint James) but I am unabashedly pro-Halo, so I’ll love it and eat it up just like all the other Halo-phytes.

Reading the links you provided, though, don’t fill me with any sort of confidence that Bungie will be fixing some of the problems from Halo 3. It’s like their reshuffling the shells, but the same problems are still underneath.

What problems do you mean T?

All I would like for them to do off the top of my head is to make the matchmaking faster/quicker to get into a game.

I guess after trying the beta(Thx) I guess I’ll see if the changes were for the better.
