December Releases

December 1, 2009 by Tony 3 Comments

It’s the last list of releases for 2009, and as is normal for December, it stinks. This is a good thing. Now maybe we can play catch up. I count two, maybe three titles worth picking up this month (unless one particular title comes out, which will make the list the GREATEST EVER). Not a lot to talk about here, so on to the list:

Xbox 360 banner

Week of December 1st
MX vs ATV Reflex
Avatar
Rogue Warrior

Week of December 8th
The Saboteur

Week of December 15th
Splatterhouse
Ride to Hell
Konami Classics Volume 1
Konami Classics Volume 2

Week of December 22nd
Guitar Hero Van Halen

Week of December 29th
Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Dead Rising 2 – So. Amazon is saying that Dead Rising 2 is coming out January 1st. Is this true? I checked some places, and all I could find was a release window of “Q1 2010” which technically means it could come out January 1st. But certainly that is wishful thinking. VERY wishful thinking.

Week of December 8th
Puzzler World
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks – Probably the biggest release this month. I love that they went back to the Wind Waker cel-shaded look. I’m definitely looking forward to this one, even if I don’t pick it up on day one.
Bookworm

Week of December 22nd
Dragonmaster
Playmobil: Pirates – So, it looks like Playmobil is the next LEGO? Does that mean we can look forward to more? Because that would be the opposite of awesome.

Week of December 29th
Gauntlet (Nintendo DS) – Here it is, the missing title that completes the Nintendo DS game library. I can’t believe we’ve waited this long.
Picross 3D

Hey buddy, could you spare some free time?

November 21, 2009 by Tony 1 Comment

Blogging (and gaming) has been light around these parts as a lot of my free time is spent watching and writing about college football. This happens every year, college football is a love of mine and I continue to enjoy blogging about it. But now, for my team at least, the end of college football (until January) has arrived, which means my blogging load at my other site goes down and I can spend a little more time here.

There are days I wish I could do this blogging thing for a living but until that dream is realized I’m just glad to be have some free time once and a while to play some games and chat with you guys about it.

Now, for some games…

November Releases

November 2, 2009 by Tony 3 Comments

It’s November! In the words for the great Keith Jackson: “WHOA, NELLIE.” Buckle up, folks, this could get chaotic.

August Releases

August 3, 2009 by Tony 6 Comments

It’s that time again, the long list of monthly releases. Thankfully, July is mercifully bereft of top-tier games, so we can play catch up with all the good gaming that has come out recently.

Xbox 360 banner

Week of August 3rd
Brave: A Warrior’s Tale
Fallout 3 Downloadable Content: Mothership Zeta
G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra– At first, I was skeptical that the movie was going to stink. Then I was sure of it. Now I’m not so sure. I have the same feeling toward the game.

Week of August 10th
Madden NFL 10– No surprise here that no other games are coming out this week. Madden is a digital force of nature.

Week of August 17th
Raven Squad: Hidden Dagger– This is the first time I’ve even heard of this game. That doesn’t bode well
Wolfenstein

Week of August 24th
Black College Football Xperience: The Doug Williams Edition
Batman: Arkham Asylum– I’m guessing James is pretty excited about this one.

Wii banner

Week of August 3rd
Daisy Fuentes Pilates– I could have listed any number of ho-hum games this week, but I chose this gem to be representative of the week. In other words, it’s full of exercises that make you feel uncomfortable and ultimately are NO FUN.

Week of August 10th
Phantom Brave: We Meet Again– Any NIS game gets a free pass from me. But shouldn’t it be “Phantom Brave: Wii Miit Again”?
Madden NFL 10
Groovin Blocks– Klax says hello, from 1989.

Week of August 17th
Sudoku Ball – Detective– Three words I never expected to go together: “Sudoku”, “Ball”, and “Detective”.
Spectrobes: Origins

Week of August 24th
Metroid Prime Trilogy Collector’s Edition– Updated Metroid Prime and MP 2, Wii controls and variable difficulty. It’s like they looked in my brain searching for the perfect Wii release and came up with this. It will be very hard to pass this one up.

… skipping the rest of this week’s dreck. I don’t even know why I list Wii releases.

Nintendo DS banner

Week of August 3rd
DS Paint
G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra
Aliens in the Attic

Week of August 10th
Fossil Fighters
C.O.R.E.
Sky Pirates of Neo Terra

Week of August 17th
Ant Nation
Marker Man Adventures
My Friend– Your life has reached ROCK BOTTOM if you are buying a video game titled “My Friend.” Please, before you do this, give me a call.

Week of August 24th
Monster Racers
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
7 Wonders 2
Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming– Any chance I get to link my post about how I feel about Harvest Moon, I take it.

PC banner

Week of August 3rd
Hearts of Iron 3
Amazing Adventures: Around The World

Week of August 10th
The Nightshift Code (JC)
War Leaders: Clash of Nations
Text Twist 2

Week of August 17th
Wolfenstein– I love the box art for this game.
Plants vs. Zombies– This game has been available on Steam for like ever, so I don’t know why it’s showing up in this month’s releases, but you should be playing it anyway, so if you don’t have it, GET IT.
Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy
Death to Spies: Moment of Truth– This game wins the “ridiculous” box art award for the month. It looks like that man has a microphone at the end of his pistol.

Week of August 24th
Fallout 3 Game Ad-On Pack: Broken Steel and Point Lookout
Joint Operations Complete Collection– Dragon-AK-47s!!

Week of August 31st

PS3 banner

Week of August 3rd
SingStar Queen – Stand Alone
G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra

Week of August 10th
Madden NFL 10

Week of August 17th

Week of August 24th

Week of August 31st
Guitar Hero 5

PSP banner

Week of August 3rd
Hannah Montana: Rock Out the Show
G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra

Week of August 10th
Madden NFL 10

Week of August 24th
Warriors Orochi 2
Dissidia Final Fantasy

Week of August 31st

New Look, New Faces

June 20, 2009 by Tony 8 Comments

So if you’ve visited the site in the last 16 hours or so, you probably noticed a new look here at buttonmashing.com. Nat has been working hard on a new theme for the new look. Big Huge Thanks™ to Nat for putting this together, I think things have come together nicely.

Content-wise, things won’t change dramatically around here, but navigation on the actual site will. Now, there will only be two posts on the main page, the most recent post and a “Featured Post,” where we can highlight a post that we think deserves a little more attention or warrants more discussion. This post will change periodically. Recent posts will still be available in the sidebar to the right. Below the Featured Post will be a collection of Asides which are short, Twitter-like posts that don’t really qualify as a “post” but are still things we think are worth a look. Everything will still be available via the feed.

We’re still working on some items, including reorganizing the categories and the links to other sections of the site. This shouldn’t take too long.

If you’re reading the site via a feed reader (which I assume most of you are) things will continue uninterrupted, but we invite you to come down and take a look.

Along with the new look, we’re also welcoming two new contributors to the site. Will and Jason O will be joining the crew to add to the buttonmashing conglomerate. Both have been frequent commenters here at the site and both have done a bit blogging elsewhere. I’ll let them introduce themselves when they get a chance, but we should be hearing from them shortly.

So welcome Will and Jason and welcome all to Buttonmashing 2.0.

Buttonmashing is going to kindergarten!

June 16, 2009 by Tony 3 Comments

That’s right, today button mashing dot com has reached the age of a small child. Five years ago today I launched the site.

We’ve got some new stuff coming, including a new look and some new contributors. I’m closing my eyes, making a wish, and blowing out the candles!

Contest Announcement

December 16, 2008 by Tony 5 Comments

It’s that time, when someone’s Christmas comes early, thanks to Split Reason and the contest they sponsored here at Buttonmashing dot com.

I’ve taken all the comments from the past month or so, put all the names in a hat (a Google Spreadsheet, if you will) and randomly drew out three names (random.org). The numbers that corresponded to each row in the spreadsheet was chosen as a winner. The numbers chosen were:

random.org

As you can see, there are four numbers, but only three winners. I wanted to choose an alternate, in case one of the winners was unable to claim their prize. We’ll keep the identity of that person secret for the time being.

The winners have been contacted already but here, for posterity, are the winners: Jason O, Woolfman, and Jeffool. Congrats, Gents!

This has been a fun little contest to run. Looking back on it, there are some things I would do differently, but for a first time, I’d like to think this went off rather well.

Once again, huge thanks to Split Reason for their sponsoring this contest. Even if you weren’t a lucky winner, you’re still more than welcome to head over to their site and pick out some gifts for all the gamers on your Holiday List!

(For those of you interested in my methods, you’re welcome to look at the Google Spreadsheet I used or Random.org’s information on how they generate random numbers. If you weren’t selected in this contest, good luck in the next one!)

Upcoming

December 7, 2008 by Tony Leave a Comment

I’ve been so busy the past few weeks that there won’t be a “November in Review” post and I guess I’m not seeing much in terms of new releases other than Prince of Persia, so there won’t be a Monthly Releases post, either.

I do have a few updates I’d like to talk about. The first is a reminder for the contest I posted about back at the end of October. Since I haven’t been around a lot lately, I’m going to move the deadline all the way back to December 10th. So all the comments we’ve received thus far, plus any other up until December 10th will be entered in the drawing. I haven’t counted them up yet, but I know we’ve got quite a few so far. So keep the comments coming. And go visit Split Reason while you’re at it!

In terms of upcoming posts, I’m working on a bunch. I’ve added a handful of new podcasts to my playlist, so I’ll be reviewing those, in addition to the ones I’ve recently dropped, in a full-sized Podcast Post.

I’ve been toying with the idea of aggregating video-game blogger reviews, in a sort-of “meta-critic” style, but putting more emphasis on the actual review and less on the review score. I’d like it to be a one-stop shop for anyone searching for reviews for a certain game. I see it as a new angle at the game review process, hopefully eliminating any bias that may be built-in to reviews coming out of traditional sources. It’s been slow going releasing this feature, as it’s a lot of work, but I’d really like to roll it out soon.
