Carnival goes Big-Top

January 16, 2006 by Tony 6 Comments

The time has come to start thinking about the next Carnival of Gamers. This coming Carnival will be held under the proverbial Big-Top in February, at the venerable Slashdot Games. While I hope anyone interested in submitting something for the Carnival of Gamers would participate in any Carnival, having the Carnival at Slashdot is pretty unique. I’m not sure if Zonk will post to the front page of Slashdot or simply the Games page, but regardless, it will get in front of a lot of eyes and will be a chance for a lot of new people to read your stuff. Very exciting.

While he hasn’t said this directly, I’m assuming that Zonk will also have to do some moderating of the submissions (which hasn’t happened to this point) because it will be a reflection of Slashdot as well. That’s not to say he’ll reject anything, I just think he would want the submissions to be of a certain quality and content. I don’t think this has been a problem in the past, but with the exposure this Carnival will get, I’m sure he’ll have to cull some of the riff-raff. (I’ll have to get a definitive answer on this topic). Don’t let that prevent you from submitting something from your blog, though! I hope everyone who has participated in the Carnival in the past will continue to do so and hopefully we’ll get some more regulars to tag along!

It’s quiet in here.

January 12, 2006 by Tony 1 Comment

There’s been a lack of content around these parts the past few days but I’ve got a legitimate excuse. Here at buttonmashing.com, we like to talk about video games. I come at the topic from different angles – how the media portrays them, how they are used and abused by politicians, and how much fun and enjoyment we gamers derive from them. The last point means I’m actually playing games. Unfortunately, my gaming time has been squeezed out by Real Life Duties (RLD®) lately so I’m at a loss to discuss any recent gaming sessions.

I also blog about sports and blogging in general, but since OSU football has ended and nothing earth-shattering has happened in the Sphere-o-Blogging, I ain’t got much there, either.

Nevertheless, I do have some ideas floating around in the draft-ether. Some will materialize. I’ve been thinking about Nintendo and the games they make (they’re fun!), various “handles” or gaming nicknames I’ve used (and what they say about me), music and video games (but not what you think!), and others.

Stay tuned!

Don’t look back in anger

January 3, 2006 by Tony Leave a Comment

I’m making necessary preparations to upgrade to WordPress 2.0, so I took the opportunity to take a look back at the past year of buttonmashing.com. Here are a few highlights:

  • Resident Evil 4 took control of my gaming in early January. I was so impressed with the authentic Spanish phrases that I started keeping track of them, with their English translations. This ended up being one of the most popular posts I made this year. It was popular when the Gamecube version was hitting its stride and then had new found popularity when the PS2 version came out. It’s been linked in numerous forums and the like. I’ve tried to keep it updated and I’m pretty proud of it.
  • The greatest moment of 2005 was, hands down, the birth of my son Mason. He’s now almost 10 months old and is starting to like playing with the controller when dad is playing games. He’s another button masher in the works!
  • Of course, the best blogging moment of 2005 for me was the birth of the Carnival of Gamers. It started with a simple proposal, resulting in some interest. The first Carnival rolled through these parts in May (with a little controversy thrown in) and has continued on ever since. I’d like to thank all of the people who have been involved with the Carnival, whether it be participating or hosting or simply taking the time to enjoy the blogging, it’s been wild ride. I’m looking forward to many more Carnivals!
  • Discussing 2005 wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the Hot Coffee mess. I had some thoughts about it and posted them, as usual. I was actually playing GTA:SA at the time, how convenient. In the end, it wasn’t about the game, it was about everything but the game. Hopefully everyone learned their lessons in that case.
  • Mentioning Hot Coffee and not mentioning Jack Thompson is, like, a crime or something.
  • The Xbox 360 was released to the gaming public, making me instantly jealous of anyone who had one.

Phew, what a year it was. And what of 2006? A few predictions:

  • I’m not going out on a limb saying this, but the Nintendo Revolution is going to follow in the DS’s footprints — its initial reception will be lukewarm but once Nintendo starts releasing killer apps, it will explode. I’m talking BIG TIME. People will be praising it the way the DS is getting praised now.
  • Nintendo will learn from its initial mistakes with the Nintendo WiFi Connection and improve its online functionality for the Revolution, giving Xbox Live a run for its money.
  • The PS3 will suffer greatly in the US as backlash from all the Sony troubles and debacles (Rootkits on their music CDs, graffiti “ads” for the PSP, constantly crippling the PSP with updated firmware) of the past year. It will still sell like hotcakes in Japan but will not have the same success the PS2 did here in the states.
  • PC gaming will be declared dead no less than three times, only to be revived with releases like Neverwinter Nights 2, Spore, and the WoW and Guild Wars expansions.
  • I will still have a pile of games to play this time next year, resolving to get to them “sometime.”

Time will tell on most of those, but that last one is pretty much a forgone conclusion.

Best Gaming Blog?

December 20, 2005 by Tony 16 Comments

For the past few years in the blogosphere, there have been various “Best of” awards, including The BoB Awards (The Best of Blogs Award) and The Weblog Awards but as I’ve surfed the various categories, I see that Gaming Blogs have been left out in the December cold. I know Spike TV had their “Best Gaming Blog” Category, along with its whopping 3 nominees, which ended in a tie, but come on. I’m not saying the blogs weren’t worthy of their nomination, but there’s more out there than just those three. While I don’t consider Slashdot a “blog” per-se, Kotaku and Joystiq are both commendable blogs. Those three sites are great, but I think there’s more than just those guys.

So I’m thinking about doing a Best of Gaming Blogs poll here. Before we can have a poll, however, we need some nominees. Leave a comment here with a list of your favorite blogs. I’ll take nominations until Monday. If there’s enough interest, I’ll post a poll where the votes will be tallied. If not, I guess gaming blogs will have to wait another year for their own award.

As a courtesy to the Spike TV finalists (whether they’re proud of that distinction or not) I’ll start out with Joystiq, Kotaku, and Slashdot Games as nominees. I’ll also add my nominations: Dubious Quality, Wonderland, Kieron Gillen’s Workblog and 4 Color Rebellion are a few of the many blogs I thoroughly enjoy. (and how could I forget my favorite MMO-blogger, AFK Gamer!)

There’s a lot of good blogs out there, so nominate away!

Update: I also submitted a forum topic at Evil Avatar on this subject, you can read it here.

I know some buttonmashing.com readers prefer to use an RSS aggregator (I’ve said on more than one occasion the Bloglines is the best). I haven’t done any updating to my feed but I wanted to make available my feed to anyone who uses a feed reader.

If you use My Yahoo as your RSS reader, you can subscribe here:

Surrounded by giants

December 11, 2005 by Tony 9 Comments

In cyberspace, no one know’s you’re a dog.

In the blogosphere, everyone is a someone. Look at me! I’m a someone! I’m the buttonMasher! Alright, so some of us are less than others. I love that some of the blogs I read are written by some really talented people. Bill from The Blog for the Sportsgamer has a new book coming out, the Gamer’s Almanac. I’ll be picking up a copy of the Almanac, as should you! Of course, I’d never turn down to a copy to review (wink wink). Crecente at Kotaku is now the video games guy for the Rocky Mountain News. Peterb at Tea Leaves has joined the ranks of “professional reviewers.” (let’s not forget the “controversy” Peter’s entry into the inaugural Carnival started. Ahh, good times! I wonder how ol’ Matt is doing). Of course there’s more. These are just a few that have happened recently.

Just like they say in the PGA Tour commercial, “These guys are good.”

Wanna buy a blog?

October 25, 2005 by Tony 2 Comments

I normally wouldn’t post something like this (it’s one step removed from a ok-cupid quiz) but I got a laugh from finding out how much buttonmashing.com is worth. With the hullabaloo over Weblogs, Inc. being sold last week, who couldn’t wonder what their blog is worth.

My blog is worth $41,211.42.
How much is your blog worth?

So, how about it? How much is yours worth?

go.to hell

October 11, 2005 by Tony 4 Comments

I currently use the WordPress plug-in WP-ShortStat (I’m thinking about trying out Mint. Is anyone using it out there?) that seems to do a better job of tracking visitors to buttonmashing.com than Statcounter, which I also use. Recently, I’ve noticed hundreds of hits from *.to addresses. They show up in the ShortStat logs but not the Statcounter logs. I figure these are hits from spammers. Weird thing is, Spam Karma isn’t reporting any comment/track back spam from these addresses. This is what a recent bit from the ShortStat report looks like:

buy-adipex.drop.to 10:14 pm
alprazolam.go.to 10:14 pm
alprazolam.go.to 10:14 pm
online-hydrocodone.drop.to 10:14 pm
buy-cialis.hey.to 10:14 pm
viagra-.get.to 10:14 pm
online-valium.get.to 10:14 pm
viagra-.get.to 10:14 pm
phentermine-.get.to 10:14 pm
hydrocodone.mysite.de 10:14 pm
online-fioricet.drop.to 10:14 pm
xanax.get.to 10:14 pm

Does anyone know what these hits would be accomplishing? If you go to one of the sites, you go to a spam search site hawking whatever the *.go.to or *.get.to is. If you go straight to go.to or get.to you get redirected to v3 Web Hosting. I imagine that’s a cheap place to get sub domains to redirect to your paid for search page. Anyway, it still doesn’t make sense to me.

Any other bloggers seeing these same kind of hits showing up? Is there any rhyme or reason to this? Or is it something I should just ignore? I’m not learned in the ways of the nefarious spammer. It’s just something that’s bothering me.

Congrats to 4 Color Rebellion…

September 27, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

… on showing up as a Yahoo! Daily Pick. (screen shot from My Yahoo!. No, really, it’s my Yahoo! page. It’s mine, all mine!)

4 Color Rebellion is a great site for all things Nintendo. Their DS coverage is the best and I check them out all the time.

Now for a change of pace

July 25, 2005 by Tony Leave a Comment

Just like the rest of the gaming world, I’m growing tired of the whole GTA/Rockstar/Jack Thompson/Hillary Clinton fiasco. I will endeavor to avoid future beatings of that dead horse. There’s only so many times you can whip a rotting carcass.

So switching gears, I wanted to remind everyone about the Carnival of Gaming #5 over at Unfettered Blather. You’ve got more than a week to get your submissions into Botswana, so don’t delay! There’s been enough controversy streaming through the gamingsphere so there’s no excuse not to submit something. But I’ve got an inkling Carnival #5 is going to be the Carnival that C.J. (and J.T. + H.C.) carjacked.

I forgot to link to Cathode Tan’s excellent second interview, this time with Jeff Freeman, a favorite blogger of mine. Another great interview from Josh. (who still has not received an answer to his Carnival Quiz. Search me.)

Also, Corvus did a sweet buttonmashing sketch for me. I hope to use it in future buttonmashing.com items. Thanks again, Corvus!

So enough with the GTA buzzkill already. Gosh!
