Resident Evil 4 Translation Guide

January 15, 2005 by Tony 407 Comments

Resident Evil 4

As you may or may not know, RE 4 is set in an old, run-down, decaying European town. As luck would have it, it turns out to be an old, run-down, decaying Spanish town. Luckily for me, and all you loyal ButtonMashers, I spent two years in Spain and I am endeavoring to translate some of the sayings you’ll hear the possessed villagers yell as they try to kill Leon. My hats of to the guys who wrote the Spanish lines, most of them are well done, including the naughty i words. I am trying to keep this a PG-rated blog, so you’ll have to use your imagination for some of the definitions here. This list will grow as I progress further in the game from the luxury of my comfy seat and remember more of what is said. (Update: I have since beaten Resident Evil 4 but decided to keep this list updated, based on the daily hits I get looking for these translations

Update 2: Ever since the release of Resident Evil 4 on the Playstation 2 I’ve noticed an uptick in google requests for “Resident Evil 4 Translations”. I’ve been keeping the list updated as much as possible, so feel free to add anything I’ve missed, whether you know how to translate it or not.)

So, as a public service, I present you the buttonmashing.com “Unofficial” Resident Evil 4 Spanish Phrases translation guide, complete with your additions:

  • Cabrón – Literally translated, this means “mountain goat”. Slang, it means “mothertrucker”.
  • ¡Jefe! – Boss!

  • ¡Mátalo! – Kill him!
  • ¡Mátenlo! – Kill him! (another form)
  • Morir es vivir. – To die is to live.
  • ¿Qué carajo estás haciendo aquí? ¡Lárgate cabrón! – What the hell are you doing here? Get the hell outta here, cabrón

Resident Evil 4 PS2

Updated (11/12/2005) – Thanks to Dudeman, RE4Fan, Marcos, SpikeRevell, Darkzeta, and Angelo for the latest request and additions. I know that with the recent release of RE4 on the PS2 that we’ve had a new influx of people searching for translations. Hopefully all these will make the enjoyment of this most excellent game. Let me know if there’s more! Keep ’em coming!

Updated (8/29/2005) – Thanks to Marionette, Mark, Kasage, David for reminding me of some of the phrases I’ve missed. Keep ’em coming!

WOW u guys must suck if u just go the chicago typewriter…have u beaten mercenaries mode?

In the castle, the cultists are say cohenlo and the easiest way to beat the island in mercenaries mode follows:

Leon: walk around and collect ammo and time while killing as many ppl as possible and make sure you grab the bonus times when u see alot of ppl and go on top of one of the roofs. when the giant chainsaw man comes out, go to the roof top with the zipline and take out your shot gun. shoot him in the face until he stumbles and evertim afterwards he will stumble until he dies

    Ada: USE THE RIFLE!!!

Hunk: (this is probably the hardest thing to do in all of mercenaries mode)save your grenades up for the chainsaw man and snap other ppl’s necks by shooting them ONCE in the head. if you get close to them w/o getting hit, it will be easier because the others will back off

Krauser: use the bow and save the arm attack for the chainsaw guys and bonustimes
(make sure you dont miss with the arm attack)

Wesker:EASY just use the magnum and rifle on the chainsaw man

Excuse me metroidman (omg i love metroid SAMUS U ROCK), ive been having a few rooms in my house re-furbished and my kitchens being made again so i had to pack away my pc to make more room in my room for boxes and stuff..

yes well with “zyles” or “zylz” (whatever you call it), it should be a random grunting noise i think, its the yelling sound they make before attacking you, however i have had no luck finding such a word yet, im too busy playing my new games (RE0, splinter cell: chaos theory, mario sunshinem, Resident evil remake and metal gear solid: the twin snakes) So, ive been a bit pre-occupied with the work and gaming lol.

As for “U guys r stupid”, the word is not “Mohenlo” its “Cogedlo”. The word “Cogedlo” is pronounced with a heavy H sound, so it sounds like “Cohiglo”, and it means “grab him”

Sorry metroidman, i havent reached the island yet, i think im around chapter 3 or 4, i havent played resi4 in 2 weeks now, im sure when Tony comes back he can help me out, and have a little patience, i know i said i’ll be here everyday but hey, some stuff does come up you know, i have my priorities. i dont think the guys with shock sticks are actualy saying anything, they just kinda sqeal

the reason why i only just got the typewritter is i only got the game a week ago, and have not had that much time to play, due to the fact that i’m testing for a black belt in a few weeks

ohh that might explain it…even tho i did get in october of last year like a week after i got the game….it isn’t that hard

R u sure the shock stick guys dont say anything?

i know that they scream like when they die, but some times they say detras de ti ibicil and zapotec or sumthiing….im pretty sure one said luis baton as well

Thats what i said, and yes “U guys r stupid” i have reached the island, more than 28 times, yes, on my other professional game, im on round 17, yes, 17. So i rest my case.

As for the “zylz” or “zoylz” noise that the ganados with shock sticks, its more of a noise, a sqeal as flamingsqirrelofdeathv2 has stated perviously, no wonder i was getting confused, seriously people, its a barking noise, it doesnt mean anything, heck, its not even spanish, so dont ask silly and pointless qns like that *COUGH METROIDMAN COUGH* and getting all worked up about it

okay okay, enough 10 year old crap. and really the salesman, 29 times??? methinks you have too much time on your hands…. wait this is coming from the guy that logged over 100 hours on harvest moon 3 before he played it so much the internal batterie died (yes, i know i have no life) i really think the game kinda goes down hill at the island, i mean, it tried to put a freaky “mad seintest” thing in there, and it didn’t work so well, then they put in the regenorators……….oooooo…………i hate them so much. it got better after a while, but still that part just was too….. old resi for me, it didn’t go with the rural spanish thiong they had going.

Flamingsquirrelofdeathv2 – Yeh, “Cohelo” is actually “Cogedlo” which means “grab him”.

Remember people, the word “Cogedlo” is pronounced “Cohilo” as the “g” is pronounced with a heavy “h” sound.

Yes i have noticed that and given it some extreme thought, and i have come to the conclusions that due to the fact that there are no female zealots, the male zealots have become sexually fustrated, and hearing them around the corner chanting “Cogedlo Cogedlo Cogedlo…” (Grab him Grab him Grab him) has lead me to believe that there is something going on before Leon comes within sight of them, something that i do NOT want to mention

awww man, thats funny! i dont own any other resi games, though i have played them, and become extremely frustrated at the camera angles and lack of shooting control, they are still fun, i wanna see capcom remake all the old resi games, but with resi 4 style controlls and camera

PS. is there a way to kill regenorators with the chigago typwritter? with the hand cannon, i know you just blast the crap out of them like twice, but i have yet to master mercinaries mode, and have not unlocked it yet (okay, i admit, i suck, i only have leon, i havent even unlocked anybody else, but i’ve only played it like twice)

i wanted to know, becuase, should i just continue playing normal mode, or stop, beat mercinairs, and try to upgrade the HC before getting to that danmed island, becuase i truly hate those regenorators

yeah, in the list it’s “¡Es el forastero! – It’s the foreigner!” the fact that they have extremely heavy acents dont help all that much, but thanks

i found out that the regens die extremely quikly under the chicago, i beat the game again, and also got the IRL (infinte rocket launcher) now to get the hand cannon (even though i suck at mercinaries) it’s funny how quickly krauser dies with the typwritter

oh yeah, and in your “gramatical error” you were actauly right, it would be “the conclusoin
” “a conclusoin” would imply there are more than one, but it would still be worded imporperly, your post worded properly would be

“Yes i have noticed that and given it some extreme thought, and i have come to the conclusion that there is something going on before Leon comes within sight of them, something that i do NOT want to mention, due to the fact that there are no female zealots, the male zealots have become sexually fustrated, and hearing them around the corner chanting “Cogedlo Cogedlo Cogedlo…” (Grab him Grab him Grab him)

*shudders* and i thought that the t-virus zombies in raccoon city eating each other like dinner was bad enough… urgh… *shudders again*”

see, so your post was actualy full of gramatical erros, first you said “conclusoinS” with a S, but only mentoind one, then instead of telling us your conclusoin, you told us WHY you had arived at that conclusoin, then told us the conclusoiun, when it should have been the other way around.
