Games on my Radar

October 6, 2008 by Tony 5 Comments

Nintendo DS
Well, it looks like my 360 is on the way out, again. So for the foreseeable future, I’ll be seeing a lot more DS and PC action, with the occasional DS game as well. With that in mind, here are a few games that are showing up on my radar.

For the DS, three games that have piqued my interest:

Lock’s Quest
I have mentioned this game before, but it completely fell off my radar until recently and now I’m ready to give this a go. It’s quite simple: an RPG with Tower Defense. Need I say more?

Disgaea DS
Disgaea is one of those games I’ve always been intrigued by and always wanted to play, but never had chance due to its platform exclusivity. Now that it’s coming out on the DS, Disgaea is finally within my reach. Even though it’s a port of the PSP version (which is, itself, a port of the PS2 version), I want to play this game. I’ve heard of its depth and replayability and I want a piece of that action.

Chrono Trigger DS
Being a part of the Greatest Video Game Generation™ (The 16-bit generation), I played my share of Square titles on the Super Nintendo, but one that I only played briefly was Chrono Trigger. I played enough of it (before I had to return it) to know that it was awesome. Now I get a chance to relive those memories and actually finish the game. This is going to be a great game.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (link is in Japanese, sorry)
I love Fire Emblems on the GBA and started playing the Gamecube version before getting distracted by other games. This one isn’t due out until next year, but another one I’m anxiously awaiting. I’m starting to see a pattern here.

Is there anyway to disagree that the DS is not the best gaming console out there right now?

Dead Space
If you’ve been following the development of Dead Space at all, you already know EA is going all-out in developing the back story and setting the stage for the release of Dead Space next week. If you haven’t been following its development, definitely check out No Known Survivors. There’s lots of good stuff there. We should be getting copy here in-house and hope to have a review of it up as soon as we can. Even though my 360 is kaput, as soon as it’s back in commission, I’ll be firing this up. I am very much looking forward to this.

The Godfather II
Speaking of EA, I’ll admit interest in their upcoming open-world mobster game, The Godfather II. That’s not arriving for a while, though, so we’ll have to wait and see how it develops.

There are more games out there, especially some triple-A titles for the 360 coming out very soon. But until I get my box back in house, fully operational, it’s the DS for me.

(Updated: I knew I’d forget something. I meant to include Fire Emblem for the DS. That’s been corrected)

Nintendo Gets Closer to the iPod

October 2, 2008 by Nat 6 Comments

They announced the DSi earlier today at it’s Fall presentation.

From what I’ve been able to gather:

  • It’s 12% thinner
  • It’s $178 (Sorry, Japan only right now)
  • It has a camera
  • It’s not replacing the DS Lite
  • It has an SD slot, but no GBA slot
  • It has internal storage and plays music
  • It has bigger screens
  • It is awesome

My DS Lite is currently going on the fritz. However, it’s too bad this does not look to be released in the States until after Christmas. It would have been the toy of the season. While cool, I think Nintendo is shooting themselves by not releasing it here at the same time.

September in Review

October 1, 2008 by Tony 5 Comments

A month has come and gone here in Buttonmashinglandia, so let’s take a quick look at the month that was.

The most exciting news for the month was the recent addition of two new bloggers. We’re already seeing the fruits of their labors, and so far so good. We currently have a bunch of ideas simmering in the pot and hope to announce some exciting new features soon.

As far as site activity, we had 31 posts and 143 comments. I think that qualifies as the best month for comments, by a long shot. Traffic was pretty steady, almost exactly like last month. According to Google Analytics, someone visited the site with a screen resolution of 0X0. Not sure how that’s even possible. 2% of you readers hit the site using Google’s browser chrome. How is it look?

Top posts

The following posts garnered the most eyeballs in August (outside of the regulars):

5. 2 Minute Review: Too Human
4. September Releases
3. Magic Mushrooms and Tanooki Suits
2. Whether ‘Tis Nobler in the Mind to Suffer
1. Walking away from violence

Nat killed this month! 3 of the 5 tops posts where his. Which is obvious proof of my genius, what with me inviting him to join the site!

Previously, on buttonmashing

A year ago, it was Halo 3 time!
Two years ago, I formed Buttonmasher Theorem #1 after being completely engrossed in Dead Rising.
Three years ago the Wii (codename Revolution at the time) had just been announced and interwebs were abuzz!
Four years ago the sheen was beginning to come off my first impressions of Fable. Just in time for its sequel to hit the shelves!

Strange, funny searches

As always, I hand select a few searches that made me chuckle or weep. You decide!

“finish endless ocean” – You’re joking, right?

“cakas gigantes” – My Spanish may be rusty, but I think this person was searching for gigantic poops. Please let me be wrong.

“does eve online get better?” – I get this search every month. It’s referring to the MMO EVE Online. I hope it isn’t the same person every month. The answer is NO.

“my little sister does better at me in the force unleashed button mashing” – You’re among friends here, pal.

On the horizon

Lots of fun and exciting things planned for the site. That’s all I’ll say for now.

In My Hands v2.0

October 1, 2008 by Brock 5 Comments

I know these are usually just left as is, but getting my mitts on a copy of this game is one of those feats that just made my day. I’ve been wanting this game since waaaaay back in 2002 or so when it was originally released. I passed on it when it first came out and since then it has been impossible to find anywhere.

Fast forward to last year. I was in one of the two rinky-dink video stores in my town and I happened upon a copy of R.A.D. on the shelf. I tried to convince the clerk to let me buy it, but no dice. It drove me nuts as I knew nobody else in town was going to rent it. I’ve gone into the store since and checked to make sure it was still around and thankfully it was. I was heading home from work today and popped into the store to see if they had Iron Man on blu-ray (nope) and there was my lonely R.A.D. on the shelf. The owner was in the store today and I put on my best hang-dog expression and asked if he’d be willing to part with it.

$15 later, I was walking out of the store with the game! And from what little I’ve played, it is a blast.

This is one of those games that, by not buying it and never being able to find it, turned me into the kind of near obsessive collector over the past several years. If I ever see a game with an interesting concept, I am almost loathe to pass it by because I don’t want a repeat of what happened with this game to happen again. It doesn’t help that you’ve got a company like Atlus that preys upon people like me, what with their awesome concept games and incredibly tiny print runs!

It’s the monthly releases, yay hurray!

Xbox 360 banner

Week of October 6th
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Samurai Warriors 2: Extreme Legends for Xbox 360
NBA 2K9
NBA Live 09 – It’s been a long time since I’ve done a basketball game. I’ll be adding one of these to my GFQ but won’t be buying either.
Fracture – I haven’t tried the demo out, but I think Ehergeiz has. Hopefully he’ll fill us in.
Guilty Gear 2: Overture

Week of October 13th
FIFA Soccer 09
Dead Space – Dead Space is one of those games on my radar. Definitely looking forward to this one.
Saints Row 2
WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008
Golden Axe: Beast Rider – Everyone picked the girl when you played Golden Axe back in the day. The developers are just saving you one step. AMIRIGHT?
Blitz: The League II
Rock Revolution – Konami is really going to try this? Is there room for one more Rock Band game?
Disney Sing It Bundle with Microphone – My wife and I are seriously considering this for our daughter. She already thinks she Ariel (or Jasmine, or Cinderella) so we figured this would be perfect for her.

Week of October 20th
Fable 2 – I completely feel for Fable and ended up pretty much hating it. I’m not getting burned this time. I’ll be watching the reviews carefully with this one.
Far Cry 2 – If I can set traps that send bad guys flying through the jungle like the first one, sign me up!
Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
Monopoly – Monopoly? Really? Shouldn’t this be a downloadable XBLA game for 400 points?
Legendary – Don’t know much about this one.
Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3 with Dance Mat – I include DDR games every time they show up, because I secretly hope some of my readers are die-hard DDR’ers.

Week of October 27th
Fallout 3 – Man this month keeps getting better and better. I am going to be broke by the end of the month.

Week of October 20th
Wii Music – It’s going to take a bunch of good reviews for me to consider this one. Just doesn’t sound fun.
Monopoly
Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader: Make the Grade – If you buy this game, no.
Disney High School Musical 3: Senior Year
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
King of Fighters Collection- The Orochi Saga

Guitar Hero World Tour
MySims Kingdom
Line Rider 2: Unbound
Cooking Mama World Kitchen
Build-A-Bear Workshop: The Fur Seasons Islands – I was surprised when they made a DS version of this game. The fact that there’s a second one makes me question humanity.
FIFA Soccer 09 All-Play
PBR: Out of the Chute – Pro Bull Riding? For the Wii? I am so confused.
Ultimate I Spy
Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine – For all the licensed games I make fun of, this is one game I’d like to try.

Nintendo DS banner

Bleach: Dark Souls
The Legend Of Kage 2
Exit

Week of October 13th
Populous

Week of October 20th
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia – Been hearing lots of good things about this one.
Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon (Gift With Purchase)
Tornado – Know how a tornado and a divorce in Kentucky are the same thing? Someone’s losing a trailer.
