Way back in the formative years of the Buttonmashing.com, I subjected myself to one of the first Spike TV Video Game Awards shows. It was terrible. I’ve had little or no interest in the show since, but for some reason, I feel like punishing myself for some unseen crime and decided to watch the VGAs, at least for as long as I can take it.
It started off disastrously, with a weird thing with Jack Black in bed with an Xbox 360 and a PS3. I almost gave up before it got started.
I won’t be live-blogging it, but I will chime in occasionally when something particularly egregious happens.
Of course, if you really hate yourself, you can follow Joystiq’s live blog here.
9:29 – Mike Tyson and Peter Moore on the stage at the same time. The Apocalypse is upon us. Tyson wants us to, “Decide whosthe the real Kingth” is.
9:40 – Say what you will about Jack Bauer (I mean Kiefer Sutherland), he has a voice made for video games. Mrs. Buttonmasher concurs.
10:30 – Alright, I think I’ve seen enough. Handing the remote over to the missus. Thank you, Spike, for not totally disgusting me.
Wow, that was mostly lame.
Was it just me or were all of the world premieres only like actual seconds of gameplay. It’s cool that they can actually do shows like this but I just wish they would get better writers for the jokes.
Yeesh. I remember watching the first couple of VGA’s back in the day but they are such jokes (and so hard to watch) that I stopped. The best was either the first or second year where they announced the game of the year (Madden) AS THE SHOW WAS STARTING.
That’s like the Oscars announcing the Best Picture award in the lead-up to the opening musical number. It was awful.
It doesn’t help that you can almost follow the money trail from the award to the company that won. I’d rather watch a show like the X-Play GOTY award show where you know that the people who decided the winners actually know what a videogame is.
@Brock – Does X-Play do a GOTY? I’d like to see that. If nothing else, to see what they pick.
As for Spike’s GOTY, I don’t have a beef with it. GTA IV was a very good, if not somewhat tragically flawed, game.
Yeah. X-Play just had their yearly award show about a week ago. They picked Fable 2 as their game of the year. It was interesting as it had lost to Fallout 3 in the RPG of the year category.
That said, there was a Sessler’s Soapbox segment where he explained the rationale and I’m cool with it.
@Brock – Interesting pick with Fable 2. I’m at a tipping point where I think I can no longer ignore the praise Fable 2 is getting and break down and give the game a try.
It is a good game. I don’t feel the sheer overwhelming love for the game that many others seem to but it is a very good game and is what the original Fable had been promised to be. In that respect it’s quite good.
X-Play justified giving it the nod for GOTY as every person who played it had a completely different experience with the game AND it is very accessible for new RPG players, unlike Fallout 3.
Fable 2 is what Fable was as promised.
It is good. I need to pick it back up.
All this talk of Fable 2 makes me want to check it out. I know the Co-op is supposed to be pretty much worthless but I’d like to try it out.
Anyone know if they are planning on allowing your friends to play as their own character instead of a pre-made one?
