May in Review

June 1, 2008 by Tony 2 Comments

I started doing these “in Review” posts a while back, then got lazy and never got back to them. I’m picking up as if I never stopped, so here’s a look back at May here at buttonmashing.com.

May’s posting was (at least for me) adversely affected by the release of GTA IV. When it came down to either blog or GTA, GTA won out most of the time, resulting in a paltry 18 posts. Pretty weak-sauce.

Top posts

As usual, people are still searching for Resident Evil 4 translations, Halo 3 stats and MMO Sports games, so we’ll skip over those posts. The top three most popular recent posts were:

1. A Reason for All the Perfect Scores?
2. Why I Am Not Playing GTAIV
3. Pic Lens

GTA and pictures. That about sums up things recently around these parts!

Strange Searches

Of course, I would be remiss to not mention a few of the funny and sometimes troubling search terms that brought people to our humble site:

“how many video games do you finish each month” – Not as many as I’d like.

“eve is boring” – I get this one a lot more than you’d think. Ya, EVE Online isn’t for everyone, but maybe calling it boring is being a little harsh. Then again, mining asteroids can get tedious quickly.

“tales of symphonia tickling” – “Tickling” comes up quite a bit in searches (thanks, Nat) but this one takes the bizzaro cake for this month.

“adult games to play while travelling” – If you’re married, your options are severely limited.

“i want to trade my dirt bike for world of warcraft character” – That character better have some sweet gear.

“irony of agent toht reading life magazine” – That is something I had not thought about before. (For background, I use a picture of Toht (the scary dude from Raiders of the Lost Ark) for one of my posts)

I could go on, but I won’t bore.

Games being played

This list is actually pretty short. The month of May was spent mostly playing one of three games. What get to play comes down to one question. Are the kids up? If yes, then I’m playing Super Mario Galaxy (unless they ask for Mario Kart Wii). If no, then it’s GTA IV.

I’m working on posts for all three of these games, but they are both most excellent.

I’ll let Nat fill us in what games took up his month of May.

I also spent a large portion in May really getting hooked on Twitter. I don’t really know why or what it is, but I get the shakes when Twitter is down (which is quite often). The honeymoon seems to be over, but I still find myself there quite a bit.

I’m not really sure what June will bring (other than another year of blogging). At the very least, I’ll be finishing GTA IV. Who knows what happens after that.

June Releases

June 1, 2008 by Tony 11 Comments

Once again, I missed a month of new releases. What better way to make it up than to get out June’s releases a day early!

Xbox 360 banner
Week of June 3rd
Ninja Gaiden II – Man, I’m torn on this one. I’ve heard mixed reviews so far and I’m not really one for punishingly hard games, so this may be a rental for me.
Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Conspiracy – The report from the brother-in-law on the Bourne demo was a meh, so I doubt I’ll get this one.
GRID – This one looks amazing but unfortunately will probably never make it to my 360. It’s a shame.
Incredible Hulk – I’ll see the movie, but I’ll probably pass on the game.
Kung Fu Panda – Ditto.

Week of June 10th
Deadiest Catch: Alaskan Storm – Seriously? A show about catching crabs? I don’t see how this can be a game, let alone a fun one.
Dragonball Z: Burst Limit
NASCAR 09
Don King Presents: Prize Fighter – I smell a GTA IV/Don King Boxing crossover here!

Week of June 17th
Supreme Commander – I thought this game already came out. Or maybe it has just been marketed like crazy or something. Not really sure.

Week of June 24th
Battlefield: Bad Company – I’ll be giving this one a try soon, thanks to Josh.
Guitar Hero Aerosmith – Where’s Guitar Hero Joe Satriani?
Top Spin 3
Alone in the Dark
Operation Darkness
Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath
Hellboy: The Science of Evil – I’m a huge fan of Hellboy. I like science, a lot, too. I will not, however being seeing how the two mix.
Wall-E – Again: movie, yes. Game, not so much.
Hail to the Chimp – No comment.

Summon Night Twin Age
Kung Fu Panda
Incredible Hulk
Paws & Claws Pet Vet 2 – 2?! How did I miss the first one?

Week of June 10th

My Fashion Studio – Pre-ordered!
Looney Tunes: Cartoon Conductor

Week of June 17th
Guitar Hero: On Tour – This just really seems like a poorly thought-out idea. It does not look fun to play. At all.
Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard
Imagine Rock Star
Space Invaders Extreme – This one has been getting a lot of rave reviews. For 20 bucks, it seems like a good pick up.
Arkanoid – Same here. Seems like a lot of people are high on Arkanoid.
1 vs 100 – Words fail me.
Pocket Pets (Dogs, Cats, Hamsters more)
Tamagotchi Cornershop 3 – 3?! I missed the first Vet game, and now I learn I’ve missed the first two Cornershop games? I am ashamed.
Wacky Races: Crash and Dash
Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled
Petz Dogz Fashion – TOO MANY ZEES! Whatever you do, do not look at the box art for this game. It’s like staring into the portal leading to The Nothing.
Suzuki Super-bikes II: Riding Challenge
Pony Luv – Must… not… snark…

Week of June 24th
My Weight Loss Coach – We already have Wii Fit. Why do we need another Nintendo product to tell us what we already know — that we’re a bunch of fatty-fat-fats?
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 – Finally, a game that doesn’t make me ashamed to own a DS. I will most likely get this one to pass some lonely nights while I’m on business travel this summer.
Cake Mania 2 – I’m getting mixed signals. Should I be trying to lose weight or gorge on cake?
Mega Man Star Force 2 Zerker X Ninja – Can anyone keep these Mega Mans (Men?) straight?
Midnight Play Pack
Mega Man Star Force 2 Zerker X Saurian – I give up.
Wall-E

Alice Greenfingers – Hey, it’s compatible with Windows 98. That’s gotta count for something, right?

Club Vegas Casino – Windows
Immortals of Terra – Windows DVD

Are you planning on picking anything up this month?

New Resident Evil 5 Trailer

May 31, 2008 by Tony 3 Comments

If you missed it last night, here’s a link to the HD version of the latest episode of Gametrailers TV, which has the world premier of the newest trailer for Resident Evil 5, aka the Buttonmasher’s most anticipated game EVER. You can jump right to the trailer

If you’d just like to see the RE5 trailer (in SD, for the moment) you can see that here.

Along with that, I grabbed a handful of screenshots from the trailer and threw them up on Flickr. You can see the whole set here.

RE5 Screen - 4

Right now, RE5 looks like a high-res version of RE4. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, as RE4 is superb. I just hoped to see something more. And not just a new femme fatale.

Wii All You Can Be?

May 30, 2008 by Tony Leave a Comment

Why the Military Needs the Gaming Industry

An interesting Popular Mechanics article about gaming (and gaming interfaces in particular) and how the military is using gaming technology.

“What an interesting evolution, I thought. For years, video games had been appropriating the controls of airplane yolks (Atari 2600 joystick) and guns (the famous “Duck Hunt” pistol)—interfaces common to military equipment—and now the military is using equipment that evolved in the gaming industry.”

Not sure about comparing the NES Zapper to the real thing, but whatever. The Super Scope, though…

“By now, the dual analog thumbsticks on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers have turned the standard logic of the first-person shooter (FPS) into muscle memory for most red-blooded young American men”

and

“Some might say that all those teenagers “wasting time” on Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 are actually the warfighters of tomorrow, training themselves at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer. In fact, when offered the choice between the traditional airplane controls and gamepad controls, many younger soldiers pick the thumbsticks that are familiar to them.”

Ender’s Game, anyone?

As always, read the whole thing.

Oblivion’s secret best character

May 30, 2008 by Tony 1 Comment

I started playing Oblivion a few months ago but then got distracted by shinier games, so I never made it very far. Certainly not far enough to try any of the expansions. But this story, Why I Love Thedret The Exaggerator, cracked me up. It’s worth the read, whether you’ve played Oblivion or not.

What to play?

May 21, 2008 by Tony 2 Comments

You want to get your peace-loving GTA IV on. She wants to violently throw blue shells at anthropomorphic kart riders. Who wins out? If you’ve got a big enough widescreen with POP (Picture-out-picture), you both do!

So who gets the surround sound?

Kids say the darnedst things

May 21, 2008 by Tony 5 Comments

While we were playing Mario Kart on the Wii this evening, my brother-in-law mentioned how he really liked the SNES version of Mario Kart, or as he called it, “old Mario Kart.” My daughter asked how you played the “old Mario Kart.” We explained that you played it pretty much the same way you play Mario Kart on the Wii, only with a different controller.

Then she asked what it looked like. Again, we said it looked a lot like Mario Kart on the Wii. She followed that question up with, “was it in black and white?”

How old does she think I am?!

Needful things

May 20, 2008 by Tony 7 Comments

GTA IVWe need things like air, water, food and shelter. We want things like T-bone steak dinners and down comforters. All of us have the things we need. Luckily, most of us have a lot of things we want.

Somewhere around the 20% mark of GTA IV, it went from being a want to a need. I have become thoroughly engrossed in the story and I’m anxiously doing missions so I can see what happens next. I need to see how things end. It’s no longer a matter of wanting to. My well-being depends on it. Which is the main reason I’ve been so sparse around here lately.

I’m working on a bigger post for GTA IV, but I do want to point out a couple things, one good and one bad. The bad — almost all of the humor, the “jokes”, the throw-away details are puerile and immature. It’s not fratboy-humor, it’s 13 year-old, giggle everytime someone says “Hancock” humor. It gets old fast. The citizens of Liberty City are unnaturally foul mouthed and hot-headed. They will throw-down at the drop of a coffee cup. It also gets old. I could do without a lot of these “details”.

The good — the main character, Niko, is really well done. I don’t know if Robert De Niro was an inspiration for this character, but I see a lot of him in Niko. The facial expressions, way he talks, the hand-gestures and posture are all spot-on. Even though the guy is morally bankrupt, he is still interesting in a “The Professional” sort of way. I am anxious to see more of his character.

So with that, I must away with myself. Liberty City calls.
