Team Fortress 2: Good Behavior

September 3, 2009 by James 1 Comment

From the Team Fortress 2 blog, “Over the next few days we’ll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We’re going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system… If you’re interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2’s community will be affected by this cleansing process.”

The issue players had with the game was the random item/hat drop rates for the game were so low that a hat is a really rare thing to get. Whenever someone received a hat on a server it was broadcast server-wide and there were congratulations aplenty given and venom-filled spitefully jealous remarks thrown about.

“Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. ”

That new hat is a Halo with a level 1 Aura of Incorruptibility. I think that this was a smart way to punish those who chose to exploit the game and reward those who played the game as it was supposed to be played. Considering all of the harsh criticism that valve gets, with this move it seems to be pretty fair in my opinion. But I wonder what everyone else thinks. I know there are a ton of people who complain that they paid for the game and should be able to play it however they want to. While others say using third party programs to exploit the game is wrong and whoever did so is just paying the consequences now.

I for one will be thoroughly enjoying my halo while laying the smack down on the corrupt. 😉

P.S. BONK!!!

Runes of Magic: First Impressions

August 4, 2009 by James 3 Comments

At first look, I automatically thought this game would be a World of Warcraft copy. After spending a decent amount of time on this game and getting to level 33 I feel I know enough to give some impressions to everyone

First things first, the game is free! Yes, FREE!. Now of course there are micro transactions because after all they do need to make some kind of money off of the game, but you don’t have to buy anything and can still have a good time. The only race you can have is human at the moment, they will be adding elves soon.

pic-786There are 6 classes: Knight, Warrior, Priest, Mage, Scout, and Rogue with two more on the way (Warden and Druid). You pick two classes one primary and one secondary I’ve been playing a Scout/Rogue. (fyi – all I hear about the scout class is that they are underpowered and nerfed all the time. I’m not sure I can 100% agree but I do see where some of the frustration with the class comes from. I do know I am looking forward to trying the new classes, as are a million other people… Back to the post.) You get all of the skills of your primary class (all of the general and class specific skills) and for your secondary class you can only get the general skills. Which leaves you with sometimes either pointless skills from your secondary class or really helpful and necessary skills.

The graphics are more than sufficient for a free game. The armor and weapons actually look like the picture in your inventory(one of my favorite aspects a game if done right.) and the variety is pretty plentiful once you get into the higher levels.

The only complaint I have right now is that the installation/download/update process is long and horrible. Especially since I’ve reinstalled Windows XP after trying the Windows 7 RC. (I should make a post about it.)

There is so much more to go into detail about this game, but I’ll leave that for another post. To wet your whistle I’ll leave you with a trailer.

P.S. If you play or get started I’m on the Osha server and the Name of my Scout/Rogue is Ookami.

[2 Minute Review] Sacred 2: Fallen Angel

June 21, 2009 by James 4 Comments

Sacred2 Banner

DO: Play like Diablo but with better graphics.

TYPE: RPG (Diablo with a splash of Baldur’s Gate)

PLATFORM: Xbox 360 (reviewed here), PS3 and PC

PRICE: $60

MEAT: You choose one out of six character classes. Of which the strangest class would have to be the temple guardian,”A Temple Guardian is not fully flesh or mechanical, it is a mixture, half human and half machine.” The temple guardian kind of looks like the egyptian god Horus (kind of) if you choose to go evil or Anubis if you choose to go good.

With all of the different items you come across and all of the different ways you can shape your character there is a good chance you will have a really unique character. I went with an Inquisitor that dual wielded a burning dagger and an ice shortsword. What’s cool about the game is you can choose to use any weapon you want as long as it’s not class specific.

The big let down with Sacred 2 is the parts in between quests which turns into the same thing over and over again. You get quest A and on your way to the location to finish the quest you encounter a plentiful amount of monsters on the main road the whole way there. There is a copious amount of side quests that can lead you away from the main quest which will add playtime to your total playtime. The time spent traveling can be cut down by either using a mount (different kinds of horses or class specific ones like a demon or a sabertooth tiger) or the warp gates which are scattered around the map that are usually near important locales like a town or city.

The multiplayer aspect of the game is where I think that game will shine. Having only played the game hotseat co-op for a limited amount of time I really enjoyed it with another player along for the ride, even though we had to share a screen and couldn’t seperate. Playing online multiplayer will allow the players to be in the same world while being able to roam wherever they want. This gives the game more of an open world feel.

PERKS: Having quite a bit of room to customize your character. My personal pet peeve in video games is when you equip and awesome new sword or piece of armor and then it doesn’t show up on your character, they just have the same sword/armor the whole game through. Sacred 2 did this part of the game right, everything you equip on your character shows up so I had a burning dagger hanging on my back while I rode my horse. Also if your into being into a game for the long haul then this is right up your alley. I’m not even sure how long long you could devote your time to the game but it seems like it could suck you in for a while. The world is pretty huge so the words, “NEVER ENDING!” come to mind. One of the very first things I noticed was how expansive the world was. After searching around for a few minutes in the game world I looked at the the map and only a tiny bit of the map had been lit up showing where I had explored. The world looks great from the grass blowing in the wind to the lush landscapes Ancaria looks good.

SCREAMS: LOADING! The worst time I had with loading was in a town where within 10 seconds the game had to stop the screen from progressing to load the next section of town five times. Now if you install it on the hard drive I’m sure it will help immensely with the loading issues but the game shouldn’t have that many to begin with. How about a boss fight that isn’t just some monster with a long health bar?

Give me a story to care about. The only thing that stands out storywise for the game is that they were able to get the EPIC band Blind Guardian to be apart of it. To have better detail after you zoom out, having the camera zoomed in can give you some great detail with nice graphics but zoom out to where you can actually see whats going on and you won’t be able to tell if it’s the same game. That was a major let down in playing Sacred 2, not being able to enjoy the good graphics the whole time.

VERDICT: Buy. I think you’ll definitely get your $’s worth out of this game. You can play it until you’ve discovered everything in Ancaria which will take you a long time or just go straight through the games main quests. Regardless of whether you’ll be playing the game by yourself or with a friend the enjoyment you’ll get should be the same. If your on the fence about this game I would suggest a rental and you’ll be able to get a feel for the game and whether you want to buy the game or not. I had a good time in Ancaria and I’m pretty sure you will too!

Guess Who’s Back!!!

May 1, 2009 by James Leave a Comment

Not video game related but still cool. I’ve always liked Superman since I was a kid and only recently have I started to like Superboy, AKA ‘Connor Kent’. Then they went and killed him off in DCU’s Infinite Crisis, which just happened to coincide with some legal issues involving the usage of the character by the company.

Here’s a little snipet from the DCU blog: The Source – “Superboy is back, and starring in the pages of ADVENTURE COMICS, which hits in August from writer Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul.” Looks like Superboy is going to be taking over Adventure Comics for a little while. Now that artwork is something special. Here’s some great prelim art. More at the site that’s linked.

Wow. I like his style.

Prototype: Top 10 Reasons Trailer

March 27, 2009 by James 8 Comments

These are the same guys who brought us the old Hulk game on the xbox and that was fun for the era. This new game kind of blows that one out of the water from what I’ve seen. Any of the reasons that they listed in the trailer for getting the game work for me. I especially like the pwning anyone clip.

Powerbomb someone off of a skyscraper?

Yes please!

That’s not my favorite part though. My favorite reason to get this game is the devastator attacks. The screen-encompassing attacks look great and seem to get the job done.

More agility than spider-man, stronger than the hulk, and add the symbiote abilities of venom only more deadly, anyone going to be able to stop this guy?

P.S. That armblade he has is wicked cool.

Pure Awesomeness!!!

March 25, 2009 by James 2 Comments

There isn’t much in the beginning of this clip but it turns up the awesome dial around 0:50.

The second angle on the action towards the end of the clips lets you know how high the car gets.

Ruh Roh Raggie!

March 17, 2009 by James 3 Comments

I was looking through my Google reader subscriptions and found this gem on i.gizmodo.com and thought I’d share it with all of you.

EDIT:I completely forgot to tell you why this picture was posted…wow I must have been out of it. This is a picture of the computer screen in a nuclear power plant in Iran. The box on the screen is a windows error, not something you would want to see.

Too funny to pass up.

Dante’s Inferno

February 24, 2009 by James 1 Comment

From the name of the game I’m pretty sure it will be heavily influenced by Dante’s, “Divine Comedy“. I vaguely knew about Dante’s Inferno but I didn’t know enough to be excited about it.

I first heard about/saw the game during the VGA’s (Video Game Awards) and thought why would I be interested in this?

There wasn’t anything to make me want to follow this game or pick it up when it finally comes out.

Today however, I was looking through my google reader and found this gem of a video.

The ending leaves left me wanting a better ending to the trailer considering the majority of the first half seemed to build itself up to something. The rest of the trailer was great. I really liked the art style, the new-ish style of SFIV and Prince of Persia(the wisps coming off of people/motion/etc.) is something that I like the visual appeal of. Now the thing that makes me want to see more is the anticipation of what the game will actually look and play like. I can assume that it will be an action game of sorts but in order to see what the creators will do with the game is something that I guess we’ll have to wait for.

Hulk vs. Wolverine

January 14, 2009 by James 6 Comments

Movie Trailers – Movies Blog

I’ve been following this movie whenever they show new clips. I thought I would share this one with everybody. It was going to be a rental for me but I might have to actually consider buying it. 😉 There is also a Hulk vs. Thor movie coming out that was more appealing to me but, after this clip I think I’m beginning to be swayed. Wolverine used to be favorite Marvel character until they over used him. I still like him though, don’t get me wrong.

I think my favorite part is when Wolverine learns to fly.
