As you may or may not know, RE 4 is set in an old, run-down, decaying European town. As luck would have it, it turns out to be an old, run-down, decaying Spanish town. Luckily for me, and all you loyal ButtonMashers, I spent two years in Spain and I am endeavoring to translate some of the sayings you’ll hear the possessed villagers yell as they try to kill Leon. My hats of to the guys who wrote the Spanish lines, most of them are well done, including the naughty i words. I am trying to keep this a PG-rated blog, so you’ll have to use your imagination for some of the definitions here. This list will grow as I progress further in the game from the luxury of my comfy seat and remember more of what is said. (Update: I have since beaten Resident Evil 4 but decided to keep this list updated, based on the daily hits I get looking for these translations
Update 2: Ever since the release of Resident Evil 4 on the Playstation 2 I’ve noticed an uptick in google requests for “Resident Evil 4 Translations”. I’ve been keeping the list updated as much as possible, so feel free to add anything I’ve missed, whether you know how to translate it or not.)

Updated (11/12/2005) – Thanks to Dudeman, RE4Fan, Marcos, SpikeRevell, Darkzeta, and Angelo for the latest request and additions. I know that with the recent release of RE4 on the PS2 that we’ve had a new influx of people searching for translations. Hopefully all these will make the enjoyment of this most excellent game. Let me know if there’s more! Keep ’em coming!
Updated (8/29/2005) – Thanks to Marionette, Mark, Kasage, David for reminding me of some of the phrases I’ve missed. Keep ’em coming!
john says
i killed you
john says
matza
john says
you will DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Tony says
I’m a little confused here, John. Are these sayings I missed?
Mishioshu says
mmm i suppose there are more….those ganados from the castle they say something like “lai cocaine lai cocaine lai cocaine” when they run at you or something like that i dunno
Marionette says
Yeh that’s “cogedlo.” Remember g is pronounced as a thick h sound.
Also “MATALO!” – “KILL HIM!”
david says
in resident evil 4, i also remember hearing ‘matado’ which means kill them. And in the castle, i heard something that sounds like ‘say that rose, say that rose, say that rose’ mumbled over and over but i cant tell what they’re saying
Kasage says
I think I heard something in the castle sounding something like “Morir es venir”(To die is to come) or “Morir es vivir.”(To die is to live) I can’t tell what it is exactly. Its been 4 years since I took Spanish, so I could be quite mistaken there.
Mark says
does the first ganado say: Qué carajo estás haciendo aquí? Lárgate cabrón which means What the f*ck are you doing here? Get the hell out of here mother f*cker??? let us know! reply to my email plz
Tony says
Thanks to all helping keep this list up to date. I hope it helps!
AlEs says
I’m hispanic. All these things that the Villagers say in the translation is true. They also say, “Te jodiste” which means you’re screwed or you f*cked urself.
RE4Fan says
I remember the monks in the castel chanting something like, “Go hino” or “Go hitlo” or maybe “Ko hitno” or some combo of those words, also I’ve heard them chanting something like “lordebesedel”,anyone know what it means?
Also there are a few sayings of the villiagers that im wondering about, I’ll try and type the sayings as best I can.:
“Yenda”
“Heyyyyyyy! Aga!”
“El Vamino!”
“eh go heen!”
“Dono he hetoscopey!”
“He tres ta ben besel”
“He tres ta prompa”
During the first El Giganti fight, “Mateno!” “os vous volos vousvolos” or something like that.
Thanks goes to anyone who can translate!
(They should have put a special play mode in the game that had all the Spanish translated into English!)
sepi says
thanks for the translations! playing RE4 has encouraged me to learn spanish, now who said that playing videogames is useless?
Dudeman says
There are still a few phrases that havent been translated, like…
sometimes they say something like “a por el” or “na por el” or something, mostly those military zombies say it
Theres this long phrase they say when they see you, it starts with something like “ya es son navedas….” something or another
Oh, and some of the names in spanish i dont get either…
Los Illuminados…im guessing something to do with lights, the enlightened ones or something??
Los Ganados…the villagers are called this, does that mean the winners?
And there are the names of the creatures which i cant remember a few of them but…
Las plagas- my bet is on “the plagues”
Novistadors- those bug things that fly around…wat does “Novistadors” mean?
I’ve taken spanish classes for 4 years, so i can find my way around in a spanish speaking country, but its hard to understand what they are saying i dont know if its just cuz they have that effed up zombie voices or what, but if you can find those, and any more phrases that are left untranslated, then that’d be great if somebody could translate them
Tony says
Dudeman and RE4Fan – thanks for pointing these out, I will definitely update these as soon as I get a chance. I started playing some RE 4 lately, so hopefully I’ll pick up on the ones I’ve missed. Keep up the good work.
Jake da Snake says
Your translations are quite spectactular. Though I am not seeing many of the things that the Castle zealots say, as well as what the enemies on the Island say.
Tony says
Jake,
Thanks, glad you like it. I will be trying to go through the game on “Hard” next, so I’ll definitely pay attention to more of what the bad guys are saying further into the game.
Marcos says
¿no estas soñando?=these not dreaming?
dise the police in the beginning when you aim to him.
la campana=the bell
es hora de rezar=it is hour to say
tenemos que irnos=we must go to us
it is not ¡El forastero! is ¡ un forastero!
SpikeRevell says
They say one that looks kind of like “Es el forastero” but doesn’t sound right when I’m playing the game. When you come around a corner, they sometimes scream “Umpadastero!” Of course, I’ve no idea how to spell it or write it, but that’s how it sounds, more so than “Es el forastero”.
SpikeRevell says
Also, one I forgot (since I noticed now that Marcos mentioned the same one I did.) I remember Allí está being in the game, but I swear there is one that sounds more like “kunomesta” in there, too.
Darkzeta says
es hora de rezar=it is hour to say (is a mistranslation)
the correct translation is “it is time to pray”
tenemos que irnos=we must go to us (Another mistranslation)
It should be “Its time to leave”
“Los ganados” would mean something like “The sheeps”.
Something that I didnt see on the list was “Puedes correr, pero no puedes esconederte” wich means “You can run but you cant hide”.
BTW Im chilean (native spanish speaker for those who dont know de country :P). If you have more doubts I think I should be able to help you. Im playing the PS2 version of the game but It should be about the same as the NGC one.
Skitzo says
Los Ganados = The Cattle. Heh fitting.
Los Illuminados is The Illuminados. I think it’s just a cult name, like the Illuminati. That’s where I think they got it from. *For those who don’t know The Illuminati where a scientific group in Rome that where killed for not beliving in God within the Vatican City. The Enlightened One’s I belive that translates out to.”
SUPER CURTISMON says
soo………the SHEEP have been killen me on professional huh. lovely to know. Ashey sucks to have her around on pro diffuculty she dies all the time. some one get back to me at thehumanoidtyphoonx390@hotmail.com thanx for the translations too
SUPER CURTISMON says

Angelo says
I think the zealots also have another one,
imbecil, quiero matar!!! – Imbecile, I want to kill
I dont know if that made sense, sometimes its hard to make out what is said
Angelo says
and you can forget the best line in the game
WHeres everyone going…..bingo?
Wesker says
I have played – and completed – Pro difficutly…
Tony says
Thanks to everyone who’s commented, the lists have been updated
Jessi says
o.o Thanks so much for this nifty little translation guide. I’m currently taking my first Spanish class and it’s a good thing I didn’t go around repeating this to my teacher, asking her what it all means. X3 I haven’t beat this game yet, and it makes me sad. The first time I played it, I got to the Iron-Maidens and had to stop so I could give it back to my friend. Now I’m back in the castle, and I hate it ’cause I’m really jumpy this time around. x.x Meh, wish me luck.
Again, thank you so much. ^-^
Tyrant says
This guide has been very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do it. I would like to know 3 things though; what do Del Lago, Armaduras and Verdugo mean? Could you please add them to this guide.
Jesse says
I remember the villagers, when they find you, sometimes they’ll point and shout (what sounds like) “Goontfire, Now!!”
at least thats what I think it sounds like…
Jesse says
when the villagers find you, sometimes they point at you and shout (what sounds like) “goontfire, Now!!”
what does that mean? and what is it really?
Skarto says
I think the villagers also say something that sounds like “jabora said we could eat you!”
Dunno what it means…
Jonny says
RE4Fan mentioned the one you hear when you first use your binoculars at Pueblo and see the cop burning on the tree; they say something that sounds like: “Heeyyyyy! Attack!” Which scared me the first time I played, because I thought they had spotted me XP. Someone PLEASE get back to me on that one.
Darkzeta says
“Del Lago” can mean “From the Lake” or “Of the lake”.Depends on the context.
“Armaduras” means “Armors”
“Verdugo” means “Executioner”
Jessi says
Well, Mr. Jonny, I believe they say “Hey! Hacha!” Which is transtlated to hatchet or axe, which they seem to have a numerous supply of. Perhaps he’s asking one of his fellow parasitic friends for a hatchet so he can go about his ‘normal’ life.
? says
Is it “cogedlo” or “cogelo”? ‘Cause if it’s “cogedlo”, where does the extra “d” come from?
Tony says
It’s “cogedlo” because “coged” is the plural command form of “coger”. “Coge” would be the singular command form. So saying “cogedlo!” is like saying “get him, you guys!”
Thanks to darkzeta for picking up on the other translations.
SigSnake says
yeah…..when the villagers look at you and see you, they yell something like “Aya Laro!” sometimes.
get back to me on this.
SigSnake says
ok never mind on that last one its agarrello (grab him)
oh yeah RE4Fan lordebesedel is really Morir es vivir
(to die is to live)
Bakero says
Sometimes, after you hit them (I think), they say something like “Basta, hijo de puta!”. which means “Enough, you son of a b*tch!”
SigSnake says
what are the Ganados saying when they say something like “for diju seya bierda!” ? just wonderin.
SigSnake says
David, when the Los Illuminados go “say that rose” they’re saying “cerebros, cerebros, cerebros” (meaning: brains, brains, brains.)
GreyFox785 says
Hello, I’d just like to argue for a sec, about some thing Skizo said earlier. He said, “Los Illuminados is The Illuminados. I think it’s just a cult name, like the Illuminati. That’s where I think they got it from. *For those who don’t know The Illuminati where a scientific group in Rome that where killed for not beliving in God within the Vatican City. The Enlightened One’s I belive that translates out to.” Well, first Illuminati means “The Enlightened Ones” in Italian so they mean the same thing. Second, the Illuminati, were not just scientists killed for not believing in god, as a matter of fact, not all of them were killed, they split up for awhile, but their influce behind the scenes has been found even in these modern times. Plus, they were also aimed at destroying the Roman Chatolic Church, so, scientist they were, but that’s not all they were.
Tobias says
nice translation
Chaos says
I think it is actually “Matanol”, not “Matalo.”
Bakero says
Aaah! La campana!
És hora de rezar!
Tenemos que irnos!
Lorde Saddler…
tom says
hey, what do the people in the catle say? i think its “eleos dinos” but i dont know spanish so im guessing.
