Resident Evil 4 Translation Guide

January 15, 2005 by Tony 407 Comments

Resident Evil 4

As you may or may not know, RE 4 is set in an old, run-down, decaying European town. As luck would have it, it turns out to be an old, run-down, decaying Spanish town. Luckily for me, and all you loyal ButtonMashers, I spent two years in Spain and I am endeavoring to translate some of the sayings you’ll hear the possessed villagers yell as they try to kill Leon. My hats of to the guys who wrote the Spanish lines, most of them are well done, including the naughty i words. I am trying to keep this a PG-rated blog, so you’ll have to use your imagination for some of the definitions here. This list will grow as I progress further in the game from the luxury of my comfy seat and remember more of what is said. (Update: I have since beaten Resident Evil 4 but decided to keep this list updated, based on the daily hits I get looking for these translations

Update 2: Ever since the release of Resident Evil 4 on the Playstation 2 I’ve noticed an uptick in google requests for “Resident Evil 4 Translations”. I’ve been keeping the list updated as much as possible, so feel free to add anything I’ve missed, whether you know how to translate it or not.)

So, as a public service, I present you the buttonmashing.com “Unofficial” Resident Evil 4 Spanish Phrases translation guide, complete with your additions:

  • Cabrón – Literally translated, this means “mountain goat”. Slang, it means “mothertrucker”.

  • ¡Mátalo! – Kill him!
  • ¡Mátenlo! – Kill him! (another form)
  • Morir es vivir. – To die is to live.

Resident Evil 4 PS2

Updated (11/12/2005) – Thanks to Dudeman, RE4Fan, Marcos, SpikeRevell, Darkzeta, and Angelo for the latest request and additions. I know that with the recent release of RE4 on the PS2 that we’ve had a new influx of people searching for translations. Hopefully all these will make the enjoyment of this most excellent game. Let me know if there’s more! Keep ’em coming!

Updated (8/29/2005) – Thanks to Marionette, Mark, Kasage, David for reminding me of some of the phrases I’ve missed. Keep ’em coming!

When you say “classic resident evil”, do you mean the REmake or the PS1 version? I’d reccommend it, either of them (get the ps1 version first, the cut scenes are hilarious, gotta love the scripts), then get the cube REmake, the jump is like one giant leap into oblivion, the game is awesome.

by “classic” i mean “not RE4” pretty much, and since i dont have a PS1 (or PS2) then i gues i’ll have to get the GC, i actualy won a PS1 in a bet, my friend (coincedentily the one that broke my finger) bet me that i wouldent yell “STOP WIPING YOUR NOSE!” at these praise & worship dancers, they touched there chin with there palm, then extended thewre arm and pointed at a diagonal angle in the sky, it looked like they were wiping there nose, anyway, i ended up selling that one (needed money for my DS, whiuch coincedentily, i’m thinking about selling now) then i got another one in a trade, GBC for PS1, and i sold that one too (money for my xbox, which i also might sell now, the wii kinda makes all other systems obselete) so yeah, i’ll get the GC sometime (READ: not sure when, since i want a wii! lol, “i want a wii!” like “i woke up and found my MOM playing with my wii!” or “we will test the wii’s true staying power when it is released” okay, enough bad wii jokes)

i just was not sure how it played with the camera angles and all (i tried the PC demos of RE2 and RE3, they were pretty cool)

get the Cube version asap, i need it really badly (seeing that i have RE0 and RE4, i need the final one before it’s too late). The Camera angles in REmake are fixed, but don’t let that put you off, it just adds onto the “0mGw00tmepeedMYS3LF” factor. ehem.

heres some advice, getting 5 stars with ada, wesker and krauser is mint easy. For Hunk, you need some good space with the Dr Salvador X (as referred to by fans) aka the Giant double-weilding chainsaw lunatic, and lob grenades one at a time (throw, explode, throw, explode etc etc)

BUT, with leon, ahhh he’s got a nice trick, stand so that ANY ladder is beneath you and wait for Dr Salvador X to say “urrrr!” and jump up. Just as he’s jumping up, slash your knife just as he’s in front of you mid-air, repeat 6 times (or less) and he’ll die! Or you can shoot him up-close with a shotgun, heck, i think Leon’s one of the best all-rounders.

    Good Luck!

6 knife slices will kill him???? that just sounds wierd, yeah, everyone else is pretty easy, okay really easy, hunk is by far my favorite character, and my best, and the grendade shoot till he gets up, wash rinse repeat works well, but yeah, i’m having trouble with leon, i just got far cry though (and as i promised, my parents were pissed) so i probly wont be playing for a few days, anyway, i’ll try out that strategy, the other thing i noticed is where that little bar that you can jump over, i can get atleast 3 shotgun rounds into him while he climbs it

Leon is astoundingly good on the waterworld level, to finish off Dr Salvador X the “get-your-hands-dirty” way, make sure he’s somewhat within 1 or 2 meters of you and ensure that your Riot Gun is equipped.
Aim for a head/shoulder shot (so your shotgun shots dont miss one bit at all) and keep blasting away at him (This also works with J-J the chaingun man). If you do shoot Dr Salvador X around that area non-stop, he should be down within 7 – 9 shotgun blasts, and please dont use the Blacktail on him, i have (in vain) and the result was not nice lol.

    hope that helps!

Oh and just wondering, whats your high scores on each level, by what character, ur max combo kill and max no. of enemies killed?

as soon as i reached 5 stars (6 mil i think) i hid and waitted for my time to end, i didn’t want to risk dying and losing it, as soon as i beat it (unlock the HC) i will go back, and try to get high scores, but as of now, my highest score on any map, is ada, on merc camp with somewhere around 8 mil, only becuase i had a huge (60 some)kill count, that gave me a big score, like i said, i hid and waite as soon as i knew i was at the 5 star levele, so i didn’t go for high scores, i will later, now i’m busy with far cry, but i imagine that it will soon lose it’s novelty, and i will be back to RE4

my friend is pissing me off by point out all my spelling and gramatcal erros, as soon as i finsh this, i will tell him to go fuck himself, and get out of my danm face, after all, he’s the one that broke my finger in the first place, so like he should be talking………..

8 million?! Thats not possible! Is your high score a 6 figure number? Because im sure you cant get above 200,000… the highest score i have e.g. 157890 or summin like that with Wesker on the Castle level…. but 8 million! Is this on the ps2 version or something? because 8 million is like….. H@X0rZ lol.

Some of my mates have now got Resi4 and they’re always boasting about their “high score” of 70,000 – 80,000…. but usually i break their confidence when they come over to my house and are saying “HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THAT SCORE?!?!”. I’m still annoyed seeing that i cant get above 158,000 points, i wanna get above 200,000 but i dont think it’s possible! The highest score i think you can reach is up to 175,000, seeing that i haven’t managed to get to it yet….. i think the only way is to get a combo kill above 65, which (again) i havent been able to get above as those bloody ganados dont come out quickly enough 🙁

Either way ive beaten Lorax86’s high score on the Village, i havent seen the rest as ive gotta come off the pc!

YAY! i beat ada and kruazer in water world, i almost got HUNK (i got 59,770 then time ran out, i did that a couple times) leon i still cant even survive with him, wesker is pretty good, but i always miss salavaldo X with the magnum on the first shot, which consecently gets my head removed, funny, i’m an exelent shot with all the other weapons, i never used the magnums, i sold the free BB, after i beat the first round and inly used 3 rounds (on kruazer) i never bought a TMP either, since i used it in the shooting range and played atoundd with it, and didnt like it

anyway, i’m gonna go grill some cheese and jalapano stuffed hot dogs, screw you guys, i’m going to make food!

Hey. Thanks a bunch for the translations. me and my brother really found it useful, as the word “un forastero!” used by one of the los illuminado’s(?)makes us laugh by the way he says it. it also sounds like a man called chris we know. Ive also found this reeeeally helpful and interesting, and i was wondering what “lo gogeth” means, which one of the castle monsters repeat over and over again, but the “TH” in “Gogeth” is pronounced like a person with a short tongue sayin “s”.
Also, the military monster things on the island say something like “hickhockheel” ???
At the beginning when you first enter the village, and you spy on the villagers with the binoculars, i can alays hear a villager male repeating slowly and calmly to his self “lone prunin”/”lo prunin”/”lo brunin”/”lo Pruni” ???also, in the castle i have noticed that the men repeat whilst walking towards me , they say something like “modulaire CD” or something like that. ??
    Anyway, thankyou again!!!! xxx
Please reply asap! hehe, as i want to talk to the game eg:
    *villager* “Alli Ester!!!”
*Me replying* “ALLI ESTER!” saying in tone of voice as in to point the finger of shame to villager.

not sure about the military dude, it’s not clear enough to understand what he says
not sure what the “lo prunin” means, but i kn ow what your talking about “modulaire CD” is “Morir es vivir. – To die is to live.” and “ALLI ESTER!” “¡Allí está! – There he is!”

Kurrdee – “forastero” actually translates more like “wanderer” or “vagabond.” but it also means foreigner. It’s all in the context. The word you probably got from a translator is “extranjero” which is also a Spanish word for “foreigner.” But “forastero” sounds cooler when zombified Spaniards say it!

Hi… Me, My friend and my brother like the phrases that the “infected spaniards” come out with, we love the monks in the castle when they say “cogedlo, cogedlo” and “matenlo!” because at first it sounded more as if they were saying “c**kheads, c**kheads” and “matador”. Theres also another saying that was funny but I’m not sure how they pronounce it but it sounds a lil like “modern DVD”. We also like the villagers who shout out “Es el forastero” which sounds a bit like “bono estente” from the fast show.
Also “mierda” which sounded a lil like “miella”.

Oh and “Mierda” basically means “deficate” or “sh*t”, i dunno why they say that word randomly when you first enter the village (with the burning officer), i hear “eyyyy! chickennnn!”, something like “colougne” (the perfume) and “MIERDA”….

….perhaps the villagers not only suffer from Las Plagas, but they suffer from…. tourettes syndrome? :S who knows.

Cabron means many diffent things, it can mean “mofo” or “bastard” it can mean that your gf/wife is cheating on you, but you don’t care, it means many things, but overall, it’s a pretty bad insult

Some of these words you may not understand quite easily ‘cuz the proper accent in Spain gives the letter “Z” the sound of the “TH” in English as in the word “thief”, but I will help you with some of these since my 1st language is Spanish, the phrase one of you was referring to as “morevswever” or something is “Morir es Vivir” which means “To Die is To live” and the phrase one of u thinks it’s “OH Vaca”, it’s actually “Oye, Ven aca” and ‘cuz it is said in such expression it can be tranlated as “Hey, Get Your Ass over here”, and another expression I saw is one that one of u thinks it’s something like “oye, chicken, colougne, mierda”, this is totally hilarious ‘cuz the expression actually is “Maldito sea Mierda” which can be translated as “Damn You, Mother f***er”, hey and another thing can you tell me what the hell are those bottle caps for? I have no clue about ’em ! lol

To Lyndz: The bottle caps are there in the game for some extra cash. You get all the bottle caps in a row, you’ll gain a certain amount of money. Starting with 15000 and moving up. Also, it’s pretty funny to hear the cry of Dr. Salvador again…without losing your head.

[…] They’ve overlayed the English translations over actual screenshots of the game, so you can figure out what the heck is going on. This makes things a lot easier. My Resident Evil 4 translations are the most visited page on buttonmashing.com, so I know there are people out there looking for this kind of thing. I’m glad I found Cracked Rabbit. Makes things a lot easier. […]
