As you may or may not know, RE 4 is set in an old, run-down, decaying European town. As luck would have it, it turns out to be an old, run-down, decaying Spanish town. Luckily for me, and all you loyal ButtonMashers, I spent two years in Spain and I am endeavoring to translate some of the sayings you’ll hear the possessed villagers yell as they try to kill Leon. My hats of to the guys who wrote the Spanish lines, most of them are well done, including the naughty i words. I am trying to keep this a PG-rated blog, so you’ll have to use your imagination for some of the definitions here. This list will grow as I progress further in the game from the luxury of my comfy seat and remember more of what is said. (Update: I have since beaten Resident Evil 4 but decided to keep this list updated, based on the daily hits I get looking for these translations
Update 2: Ever since the release of Resident Evil 4 on the Playstation 2 I’ve noticed an uptick in google requests for “Resident Evil 4 Translations”. I’ve been keeping the list updated as much as possible, so feel free to add anything I’ve missed, whether you know how to translate it or not.)

Updated (11/12/2005) – Thanks to Dudeman, RE4Fan, Marcos, SpikeRevell, Darkzeta, and Angelo for the latest request and additions. I know that with the recent release of RE4 on the PS2 that we’ve had a new influx of people searching for translations. Hopefully all these will make the enjoyment of this most excellent game. Let me know if there’s more! Keep ’em coming!
Updated (8/29/2005) – Thanks to Marionette, Mark, Kasage, David for reminding me of some of the phrases I’ve missed. Keep ’em coming!
The Fierce Deity says
The thing the ganados say during El Gigante sounds like “Usa los musculos”, or “Usa tus musculos” which is use the/your muscles. I’m pretty sure Cogedlo is Cogelo, which means stop him or grab him. And I’m 100% sure that mierda is “shnizzle” Also, the thing that sounds like “Louis Baton” is actually “Voy a matar” in a weird voice (J.J., the chain gun wielder.) But I love the Handcannon, took a few weeks of summer, but I got it
Norwegian guy says
hey, nice translation, but i miss one thing. the los illuminados in the castle sometimes say “serebu” or “serebo” something like that. what does that mean?
Lyndz says
To Norwegian Guy: The word you’re looking for is “Cerebro” which means “Brain” and To Fierce Diety: the complete phrase they say is “Lo voy a matar” which means “I’m going to kill him”, and again, as I said before this voice isn’t weird, it’s just a different accent proper from Spain, some of you may or may not know this but there’s a huge difference between accents, for example, between the Latin American acent and the Spanish(proper from Spain, that is)accent, there is the difference that in Latin America, we pronounce the “Z” as the “S” and the “V” similar to the “B”, whereas in Spain they pronounce the “Z” as the “TH”(as in the word truth) and the letters such as S, CH, SH, among others, when pronounced, they kind of produce a whistling sound with the teeth, this is why most of you get confused with accent and “weird” voices as one of you was saying; another thing, if any of you ever hears in the game the phrase “Os voy a matar” is “Te voy a matar” which means “I’m going to kill you” since, in Spain, “Os” is used as “Te”(for Latin America) which can be translated as “You”(when used as the object of the verb in a phrase or sentence)

I love this translation guide! It’s efing hilarious. The one line that scares me would be “morir es vivir” Scary…. adn does anyone else think the black, freaky, breathy guys w/ las plagas on them are scary? I think so. (the plagas look like leeches and help the dude regenerate.) ^.^
flamingsquirrel says
Yeah, regenerators are kinda freaky, once you learn how to kill them, they’re just annoying, not scary.
Tony says
Lyndz – thanks for the translations. Just one little thing: in Spain “os” is the plural form of “te” so if you say “te voy a matar” that would translate to “I’m going to kill you.” If you say “os voy a matar” that would translate to “I’m going to kill you guys.” Hope that helps out.
Link – glad you like it.
magic says
i think the hardest person to kill is sadlaar in seperate ways if u got the chicago typewriter it is much easier.
Nick says
i only remember like 1/4 of all this crap said
Jako says
There’s a Wii version coming out, soon. SO maybe they’ll have more spanish stuff.
Jako says
BTW, in the fight against the first Gigante, they say “Rapido” which means, like, “Fast”, “Hurry”, or “quick.”
Ali says
I’m just curious here, but I can’t make out the spanish that’s said during an early cutscene. The one where the Dr Salvador appears for the first time. Their accents are a bit thick, and they tend to drown each other out. Does anyone have a direct translation of the spanish used?
The Salesman says
Wow its been pretty long since i came back here, sorry, College is sickeningly tough 😛
Ali, i think what the villagers say before Dr Salvador arrives is “Vayan por detras” which means “go round the back” etc etc, but i cant help you much now, i sold my gamecube version for Resi4 and im saving up for a Wii and the Resi4-Wii version 😀
flamingsquirrel says
THE SALESMAN!!! Wasup? Tony was mad at us for spamming the comments here, so e got in email contact, but then you went on vacation and I never heard from you again! So what’s been happening? I too sold my GC RE4, I already have my Wii (got it on launch, it PWNs so hard) now I just have to wait for Rii4 (lolz, bad Wii pun)
Ali says
Thanks a lot, The Salesman. ^_^
Tony says
@salesman – good to see you’re still around, thanks for helping out with the translation. it’s been a while since I played RE4, so I don’t remember everything said!
@flamingsquirrel – I appreciate that you guys took your conversation to personal email. I don’t mind you guys chatting here on my site about RE4, but other discussion would be better served via email. Thanks again.
Lyndz says
hey, there’s one thing I’d like 2 ask u guys, what’s the name of that gun that fires like lasers or something? and how do I get it?, because in the demo I always see that Leon is holding kind of a green gun or something, and I want to get it so bad, but I don’t know how 2 get it, if any of ya know it, please tell me
thnx, see ya ’round, bye
flamingsquirrel says
That’s an exclusive weapon to the PS2 version. The wii version will have it, when it comes out in June.
Kaynil says
Haven’t played the game, but I speak spanish. “Mueren” would imply more than one person so translated it would be more like they die… Though if they say MUERE with no es, then yes is Die Die Die XD
Los Ganados… could also be referring to a group of people ‘connverted’… in religion, I’ve heard people calling other people as ‘Los Ganados’ by say… Jesus Christ. Hope this makes sense.
Lyndz says
hey, people over here, still asking about that green laser gun!!! :D, I’m playing the PS2 version, that’s why I want to know :D, now if any of ya know, can u please just give me the info? I really wanna know
hope any of ya answer, thnx bye ;D
Guy says
Me and my friend have been wondering this for a while. Zealots keep saying something that sounds like…. mrs ellis??? Hahaha sorry thats the best i can come up with. I usually hear it while playing the Mercenaries level. They say it a lot quicker compared to their muere, muere, and lord saddler. it’s not repeated like muere, and I think it isn’t that long either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
flamingsquirrel says
Wow, So i just imported the Japanese version of RE4 Wii, and was playing it, my dad was watching and translating everything for me (he knows Brazilian Portuguese, which is a lot like Spanish) and he translated things exactly like they are here, then he saw this page and was reading the Spanish off it, it was kinda creepy, he pronounced it exactly like they do in the game. Makes me want to learn Spanish. Course, it’s the Japaneses version, so it would be nice to know Japanese. but since it’s practically a direct port, all the menu’s are the same, some are even in English, with Japaneses subtitles. also the Wii version graphics have been ramped up, they look nice, really smooth, not as muddy, and no jaggies.
metalgearpimp says
Good, I was worried the Wii one would have PS2 Graphics, what was I thinking! Can you use a game cube controller?
flamingsquirrel says
No, I have no clue where that stupid rumor came from, you can’t use the bloody GC controller.
Allie says
Thanks so much for this list! It’s been a couple years since I took any Spanish, so “te voy a ser picadillos” was eluding me — though I’d figured out most of the curses! Babelfish is absolutely no help with slang. Keep up the great work!
anonymous says
To get the laser upgrade you have to beat the professional mode.
You can use the gamecube controler on the Resident Evil 4 wii. Plug in the gamecube controller after loading up the game. You can also use the classic controller as well.
anonymous says
Correction have nothing in the wiimote and a gamecube controller in the first controller port on the wii and you will be able to use the gc controller. So no nunchuck or classic controller attached to the wiimote.
flamingsquirrel says
yeah, sorry about that. You can use the other controllers. I can’t read the Japaneses manual, so I never thought to unplug my nunchuk.
Tyler says
I bought RE4 for the wi, and while no, you can’t use the GC controller, you can use the Classic controller, which is a lot like the GC one. Thatnks man for all these translations, it really helps. Oh, and does anyone know any way to kill the regenerators, besides using the infrared, because I’m trying to do a RE4 Knife+ Hand Gun Run,so.. rifle is out of the question… Lol, I had to kill el Giante with a knife.. that was HARD.
flamingsquirrel says
No, you can use the GC controller, just don’t plug anything into the nunchuk. EG: At the menu, unplug the nunchuk. You can do that mid game too.
carmen says
not sure if im pronounceing this right “Manyata” what does that mean? sounds “Mahn-yah-tah” i hear it a lot in the village escpecially when im getting chased so… lmao if you could translate please. awesome
carmen says
o… i was reading the comments earlier in, i got 189,000 points in mercanaries mode… using krauzer in the water world… run around collecting the time and the dudes that follow you (watch out for Dr. Salvador X) then wait at a bonus time chest, when the dudes start filling in the door use kauzers 1 hit-kill arm slash and you can get an easy 75,000 points. with the time you have left (approx 3.40 minutes) do the same thing, run around collecting dudes and then head to another bonus time thing. this time make Dr. Salvador X follow you with the guys and wait for them to fill the the top ladder area (fend the ones that are close to you with the bowgun) with the Dr.Salvador kill, along with the other dudes thats about 110,000 points. you should havce like 20 seconds left so just go around killing things, or hide.
carmen says
and make sure you do not drop your combo or you will not get your points!
Tyler says
I’ve seen someone get 200,500 on Youtube in the village with Ada. It was insane O.O
Tony says
@Tyler – a knife only run? Good luck with that! Also, could you send me that YouTube link with Ada? I’d like to see it.
@Carmen – manyata? Not really sure what that could be. Manana (prounounced mahn-yah-nah, with the tilde (~) over the first n) is tomorrow, but I’m not sure.
Tyler says
Yeah, a Knife only run, except for the bosses that require a firearm. For those, I’ll use a hand gun XD. Well, here is someone getting 200,500 in the Mercinaries With Ada.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35iWtYxi6IA
flamingsquirrel says
are you using a un-upgraded handgun?
That ada vid is crazy!
Tyler says
yep, un upgraded. I’m Crazy XD
Well, that Ada vid is like, ingenious. I’ve kinda re-built my strategy on it.
flamingsquirrel says
I just finished Merc on cube and Wii, and never played it (mercs) again. I never really went for high scores…
BTW, what are you gonna do for regenerators? and are you using grenades? Are you doing a no merchant run too (as in no buying F-aid sprays) I never really bought F-aid sprays, but I’ve never really done a knife only run either…
Tyler says
No first aid spray. For regenreators, I plan on shooting them till they fall, then knife them… then I repeat until they die.
Tyler says

Telepathic-Mind-Destroyer says
I’m kind of a noob and i’m only at like chapter 2-3 where you either fight el gigante or the bunch of zombies but i was almost dead with like no ammo so i started over and i’m at 2-2 when you get ashley to get on your back to open that door in the place where you learn about the blue medallions and i was wondering if anyone had any advice for me thnx!
Telepathic-Mind-Destroyer says
the regenerators, are they those things that there heads explode and the turn into huge wormy-thingies?
Tyler says
Regenerators are they ones that you get the infrared scope to kill.
carmen says
k, some advise. you wont have to worry about regenarators for a while, if you want to conserve your ammo shoot the Ganados or Zealots in the head (the zombie dudes) and run up to them when they are stragling and kick them down, when they are on the ground take your knife out and keep stabbing them until they die, for the ganados (villagers) knife them in the head if they have no weapon, if they have a weapon shoot them in the head, kick, then knife. also go around the entire room and collect the herbs etc… when you reach the castle the guns you should get are (blacktail, Riot gun, TMP) sell your other guns, even the punisher. once u get to the island (you’ll know when ur there, it is like on chapter 5) you’ll need an automatic rifle. if you want quick kills shoot the (Ganados, Zealots and the dudes on the island) i forgot what they are called ^-^’, well shoot them like right in the knee and the will fall on their knees, run up to them and a move (Suplex) will pop up, do that and they die most of the time, again if they don’t die use your knife to finish them off. red barrels and the dudes with dynamite are good for 1 hit kills, kill the dudes with the dynamite whyile others are near him and everybody dies near him, shoot red barrels while people are near it and they will die, this is VERY important! collect all the treasure you can, combine the one’s that say that they have a hole in them, and combine them with the gems and jewels that say they can fit into something. if you want a lot of money, when u get to the nosvadors (not sure if i spelled right, (but the giant misquito things) with the giant nest, do not destroy the nest, shoot near one of them (if you hit them they fall and die into a dark abyss and u don’t get the jewel they drop) and they will rush you, get ur TMP out and shoot them down until your bored or they stop coming, then shoot down the nest for like 100 jewels that sell for 1000-2000 pesetas each. the jewels are called “Red Eye”, “Green Eye”, and “Blue Eye” combine those with butterfly lamps for an easy 32000 pesetas. don’t worry about how much you do or don’t suck, beat the game and start a new file on the file you have and you can pick special suits. special suit 2 has leon with a sort of pimp outfit and ashley has a suit of armor. ashley cant die with it on. she cant be taken away either xD also you start with all the guns you had before and they are all upgraded like before, you start with your case at its length it was before and i think your entire inventory is the same as when u beat it before. I hope this helps you!
AZ tha don says
ok i wasn’t sure if this has been replied to, because i’m too lazy to read all the previous posts, but “un pued hacerlo”…. that’s yelled by don esteban i believe, i think that means something along the lines of (direct trans) one can do/make it/him/her? my spanish is rusty. wii edition kicks butt.
Telepathic-Mind-Destroyer says
carmen, that was for the build where you’re fighting with luis helping you, right?
Telepathic-Mind-Destroyer says
nevermind that last comment but can you do a suplex in the gamecube version?
carmen says
srry i’m not sure about the gc version ^-^ this is for the PS2 version. but they are pretty much the same (bear with me here) PS2 version is harder but same plot basically. O YA!! you can do the suplex in gc version. i saw it on a flash on youtube.
Tyler says
No suplex in the Gamecube version XD
carmen says
thats what i said ^-^ but you can also do it in the PS2 version. not sure about the wii version i haven’t played it yet xD
