In [Brock’s] Hands

October 24, 2008 by Brock 6 Comments

Just got the call around 7:30pm… Now to wait for the wife to finish watching her stupid, stupid movie!

LBP Box Art

Edit: Spent about 2 hours playing around with the game tonight and it’s a lot of fun so far. The tutorials are almost all chuckle-inducing and the level design thus far is impressive.

Unfortunately, the LBP servers are down (which makes sense as the game isn’t supposed to be officially available until tomorrow) so a lot of the extra functionality is still essentially locked, but the game looks like it will take a long time to play through in order to find every little fiddly bit and hidden path in each level.

Oh, and I need to go and get myself a Playstation Eye. I’d hoped I could have hooked my 360 Vision camera, but nope.

Gears of War 2: The New “Mad World” Trailer

October 24, 2008 by James 6 Comments

I was going through my Google reader feeds as I usually do everyday and came across this new marketing video for Gears of War 2.

I don’t know if I like it better than the “Mad World” video or not.

I feel that the “Mad World” trailer had a darker tone to it and that you couldn’t help feeling alone. Plus the music was awesome. With this new trailer entitled “The Last Day” it seemed more like the calm before the storm, at least this time Marcus has his bros to go with him. It’s kinda cool if you think how you’d feel if you were in their position. You and a couple of other guys are about to drop down underground and take on a HORDE of locusts with just your lancer. (Even though the lancer is a beast of a weapon.)

Kinda makes you think, at least it did for me.

I guess I’m just glad that they try and add some emotion to the game which is mostly about blowing stuff/people up.

Good marketing.

Grand Theft Dead Rising?

October 23, 2008 by Tony 4 Comments

I just read this rumor earlier today on Joystiq.

While it would be weird to go from the gritty setting of Liberty City to a zombie-infested Liberty City, I would certainly approve this change. Especially if Frank West was a playable character.

A Little Clarification

October 22, 2008 by Nat 2 Comments

Fable II is what Fable should have been.

That is all.

I’m only two hours in, and I can tell already.

Damnation: Multiplayer Gameplay Video

October 22, 2008 by James 3 Comments

When I first saw some single-player gameplay of Damnation I thought to myself, “Meh, just another shooter.”

After dismissing the game I promptly forgot about it.

THEN, I saw some gameplay for the multiplayer and I thought to myself, “Assassin’s Creed with guns?!?! sign me up!”

Granted the weapons don’t look like anything to write home about the gameplay looks pretty solid. Especially when you can shoot while you are hanging. There are a couple of instances in the clip where the player is either hanging off of a railing or the edge of a roof and taking shots at someone who has no clue where he’s being shot from.

Ahh… I can see the frustration now.

I have been humbled and promise to never cast aside what may appear to be just another game.

Has it happened to you before?

In [Nat and Brock’s] Hands: Fable II

October 22, 2008 by Nat 8 Comments

Fable II

“Nat? Getting an M-rated game?”

Yeah, I’m weak. You don’t know the half of it. Right now, I’m too ashamed to share why. Brock, on the other hand is just a video game addict. He’ll probably add to this later.

I’ve not even cracked mine open because I lost a battle and ended up watching an old Family Ties episode via Hulu via PlayOn via my PS3 last night.

Fable II – Am I missing something?

October 21, 2008 by Tony 11 Comments

A step in the way-back machine would prove that I was completely caught up in the Fable hype back in Xbox 1 days. I was head over heels. It was going to be the best game ever. Immediately after I read the TWELVE page preview at IGN, I excitedly told a fellow buttonmasher the he needed this game. My effulgent praise convinced to buy not one, but two copies of the game. (He ordered a copy online, then couldn’t wait for it to arrive and purchased the second later that day at a local store). I grabbed mine shortly thereafter and traveled to Disappointment City, population: me.

It stunk.

I promised myself I wouldn’t play the sequel, no matter how much praise it gets. But it’s happening: this time around, it might just be good. First, I recently read BAPenguin’s “10 Things You May or May Not Know About Fable II“. The first Fable was full of promises but, in my opinion, did not deliver. From these ten things, it looks ambitious once again. I’m not going to fall for it again!

Jake at 8Bit Joystick says it’s “better than the last two Zeldas.” I loved Wind Waker. That’s high praise. I still ain’t buying it.

Then, Don Reisinger calls it his “game of the year.” The hype machine is firing up again.

I haven’t checked any of the review sites, yet. I’m sure they’ll be giving it high marks. I’m looking forward to some more trusted blogs to give their thoughts and reviews. But it can’t be as good as they say, can it?

Naturally, this game now sits at the top of my Gamefly queue.

LittleBigPlanet – Recalled?

October 17, 2008 by Nat 4 Comments

Originally, this post was about how I had the title in my hands twice yesterday and my experiences with the retailers not selling it to me—but they had them on the shelves.

I guess this might be a good thing because it appears that Sony is recalling the title with less than a week to release. Why?

Somebody screwed up and included a song that has lines from the Qur’an. Apparently, this is a no no.

Quoted Sony:

During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

I only have one question. A patch? I don’t understand why a patch would not fix this? One of the most customizable games ever made and it simply cannot be just turned off or told not to play?

IF “offending song” PLAY
THEN PLAY rnd(“other songs”)

Fixed.

(I’m not a game developer for LBP, and I know this is simplistic, but…)

I’m seriously considering taking my $60 and getting another title now. Also, this doesn’t make my experiences I had yesterday almost purchasing it all too funny.

[2 Second Review] Fracture

October 15, 2008 by Brock 4 Comments

When a game is much, much more entertaining in the tutorial than it is in the actual game, something is wrong.

Fracture is like the Force Unleashed only without the story to give you a reason to proceed. It’s a fun game until people start shooting at you. I love the concept with the world deformation and maybe it can be incorporated in a better way in some other kind of game, but as it stands in Fracture, it’s a flop. I knew it was time to pop the disc out when I spent most of the first level hitting enemies with the butt of my rifle than I did shooting them.

Recommendation: AVOID

Game Review – Dead Space [Xbox 360]

October 14, 2008 by James 20 Comments

What can I say?

The people over at EA did a great job. This game shines with polish. From the writing on the walls to the dust particles in the air to lens flare when you look towards a light. From the opening cinematic I could tell that the game was going to have quality visuals. When you can see single fibers in the clothing of the main character it’s a good thing. ; )

You start the game as Issac Clarke who is sent to the ship Ishimura (“rock village” in Japanese) to fix a total communications blackout. Your assignment is to repair the ship and get gone. Sounds easy enough right? Well things start to go wrong as soon as you get there. No survivors, power is running low, and you’ve been cut off from everyone else. Great! And that’s when the aliens attack, which is where the fun actually begins.

The thing that is blatantly shoved down your throat at the beginning of the game is that you need to take off the limbs of the aliens in order to kill them quickly. Since your not a Master Chief or a Marine from Doom, you need to use whatever you got to do it. And what you have are mining tools. They pretty much work the same as a regular weapon and get the job done, all of the weapons have an alternate firing mode. Take for example the first weapon you get: it has a regular attack that is a vertical 3 shot and the alternate firing mode changes the gun to shoot horizontally. Of course making it easier to take the limbs off of certain types of aliens. My favorite weapon is the ripper >) ask me about it if you want to know more. The death animations for the main character are great, sometimes I catch myself dying just to check them out. Not to worry though the save points throughout the game are everywhere and the game saves surprisingly fast.

I love what they did with the HUD….there is none! Everything you need to know is visual on the character, how much health you have is shown by the tube on Issac’s back as well as other abilities described later. Another great thing is that your ammo is shown as a hologram projection off of the weapon that you are using as in the picture above. Along the same lines when you pull up your inventory or map screen it’s a projection as well but the game doesn’t pause while your looking through your items. The game is great at keeping the experience seamless.

When you get close to the monsters (which isn’t something you want to do) they usually grab you and do quite a bit of damage if of course you don’t get them off of you by hitting the A button repeatedly. I think that aspect of the game adds to the tension of the game. Your fighting one alien and then you get attacked from behind and have to fight the alien off of you while the the other is still approaching you. Once you get that alien off of you then you need to make sure he’s not going to get back up again. They added a melee attack and a boot stomp attack. Issac’s boot stomp seems to have a lot of umph behind it so when you stomp he really means it.

Another ability you get is Telekinesis: this lets you move bigger objects in the level so that you can continue further into a level. It handles like the Force Unleashed force grip, attaching to one object and you hold onto it until you drop it or throw it across the room or at some baddies. Fun fun fun. Some areas have no oxygen and you have to be quick about what your doing because you’ll run out of air. The more you upgrade your suit the more air you can have.

Speaking of upgrades!

You can upgrade your suit with more health, air, or inventory space via “power nodes” these little disc’s are the way you “level” up. Regarding weapons you can also upgrade the capacity of the weapon, the damage, or even reload speed. Once you have a node you can take it to a bench and upgrade your stuff there, again trying to actually put the player in Issac’s place. And on top of all that there is the zero-gravity areas in the game where you can aim across the room and do a zero-g jump across a big room to the other side of the room. The aliens will of course be able to attack you in the zero-g areas as well, fun stuff shooting at someone in zero-g, the body parts you knock off of the aliens just float along in limbo.

But enough of the game. What about the story?

The story is reminiscent of Doom 3, now if that’s just because it’s in space and your fighting monsters or what I’m not sure but it sure does feel along the same lines. The game does very well at keeping the player tense at all times. I always expect a monster around every corner but sometimes it’s not from around a corner that the aliens pop out but from the ceiling or from the floor even through a door. There is a lot of variety involved, when you backtrack through a level (you don’t backtrack much – fyi) there may be a monster that wasn’t there before. Keeps you on your toes. The No Known Survivors website that can fill you in on most of the story.

Dead Space has one of the better perks for a game that I’ve seen in a while. That is those who purchase the game at launch will get an exclusive in-game suit. You have to visit the Xbox LIVE Marketplace within two weeks of the game’s release in order to download the Xbox or PS3-themed Elite suit. Both suits will have advantages over regular armor and it will give you more inventory slots and better protection. They look cool to boot. Overall dead space is a winner in my book the visuals are great, the game mechanics are plentiful yet not overwhelming, and story isn’t half bad. Definitely pick this one up if your into the space horror genre.
