Weekend Gamer

January 1, 2010 by Tony 2 Comments

Welcome to the first Weekend Gamer of 2010! This should be a great weekend for everyone. This afternoon is the Granddaddy of them All, the Rose Bowl with my Ohio State Buckeyes against the Oregon Ducks. Afterwards I’m hoping for a big weekend of gaming. I’ve got three new FPSes: Left 4 Dead 2, Halo 3: ODST and Modern Warfare 2. I’ve had a little time with all three, so I’m not ready to make any judgements of which is the best, but I’m looking forward to playing all three.

I’m also looking forward to kicking off out “Fun Game of the Year” posts for 2009. We’ve got all the bases covered and these posts should be going live soon. We hope you enjoy them and add your own additions to our lists.

So what will you be playing this weekend? What are you looking forward to in 2010?

In my hands

Under our tree and in my hands: New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Left 4 Dead 2. (I also got Halo 3: ODST from Gamefly.) I hope to get in quite a bit of gaming next week!

Killing your productivity

One flash game at a time…

An NBA game usually lasts two and a half hours. I spent the majority of the Cavs vs. the Suns playing this little flash game. Physics and sports, my favorite combination.

Weekend Gaming

December 5, 2009 by Tony 3 Comments

Now that the weather gets cooler and the days shorter, I always seem to find more time to game. Especially now that the college football season is winding down. I already got some Borderlands in last night and I hope to get back to some Forza 3 and Mass Effect for the rest of the weekend. And of course Torchlight. Always Torchlight.

What are you playing this weekend?

A little rant

December 3, 2009 by Tony 2 Comments

rantBy hitting control-option-command+8 in Mac OS-X, you can invert your screen colors (make them go negative). I’m sure there’s a reason why someone would want to do that, but I’m most certainly not that person. Nevertheless, the other day, I opened up my laptop only to find my colors have been inverted. Somehow, my two year old had hit this improbable key combination and plunged me into bizarro negative world. It took me a little internet sleuthing to get back to normal.

After another flurry of precise key presses, the same two year old bought me a subscription to Guitar Hero on my cell phone. Best three dollars I never spent. I have no idea how he did it, but there it was.

I relate these stories in preface to a rant about Microsoft’s ridiculous Xbox Live Arcade refund policies. (Hint: they don’t have one)

Up front I am going to admit that this was my fault. It was me that left the controller out in the open with the 360 on. While I was up at the computer I get an email from Xbox Live, thanking me for my Games on Demand purchase of GTA IV. Sure enough, in the space of no more than THREE FREAKING MINUTES, my two year old had navigated to the XBox Live Marketplace, located Games on Demand, selected GTA IV (at least the kid’s got taste) and purchased it. My heart sunk as I see the “no refunds” disclaimer in the XBL email. Great.

So against my better judgement, I give Xbox/Microsoft a call. All I was looking for a little understanding and maybe a little compassion and maybe to get the purchase wiped off my credit card. I explained the unlikely sequence of events that had got me to this point (I mean come on! I own the game. Why would I buy it again?) and asked for the refund. I made my way through about four levels of “you can speak to my manager” before I was met with utter silence on the other end of the line when I declare, “I find it hard to believe that a company as large as Microsoft has no way to remove a purchase from an account. At all. That is mind boggling.” “You have to dispute the charge with your credit card company, sir. There is nothing else I can do,” she finally replies.

Yeah, so we had to dispute the charge with our credit card company.

I am still flabbergasted that Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, did not build in any mechanism to deal with this type of issue. It’s nigh unexecusable. I wonder sometimes why I stick around.

When streaming isn’t

December 2, 2009 by Tony 4 Comments

For the most part, I’m not offended by the new community features added to Xbox Live last month. I use Twitter and Facebook, and seeing Facebook pictures on my wide screen is pretty cool. But Microsoft really dropped the ball with last.fm. I’m a pretty active user of last.fm and I was excited when I heard it was going to the 360. But now that I’ve used it, I’m pretty disappointed. I can’t start the last.fm option and stream music in the background, I can only listen by leaving the app running.

Until I can stream my last.fm music and play some Hexic HD, it’s another useless feature to me.

Flakwolf – Stop getting ripped off.

December 2, 2009 by Tony 5 Comments

A while back, I was contacted by the owner of Flakwolf, a new site looking to make a name for themselves in the online game trading business.

I know there are already a lot of trading sites out there (CAG has a pretty solid system) but I never took the plunge myself into any of these services. After having been low-balled (AGAIN) by Gamestop, trying to trade in some games, I decided to give Flakwolf a try.

It’s a fairly simple trading system, with a twist. Most trading sites have you list what games your looking for and what games you have to trade, and try to facilitate the transaction. Ultimately, most of these sites leave the final details to the users, which consists of sending a game through the mail, hoping your trader reciprocates and sends you yours. With Flakwolf, they give you the added option of limiting your trading options to someone close to you, so you can facilitate the trade locally, in-person. Some may be hesitant to meet a complete stranger to perform the trade, but anyone who’s done a local transaction from eBay or Craig’s list knows it’s actually not that big of a deal.

I decided to give it a try. The system is pretty straight forward. You list a game you want to offer. Each title is assigned a “Tier” based on how popular or in-demand the game is. You can list multiple titles. Eventually someone will be interested in a game you’ve listed and request it. You send the game along and the site credits you with the trade. You can then turn that credit around and request a game of the same Tier you traded for. Pretty easy, right?

My experience was very enjoyable. I listed my copy of Chronicles of Riddick, which rated out as a “Tier 2” game. Shortly thereafter, someone requested my game, so I exchanged emails with the requester for address info. I sent my copy of Riddick to him, and he acknowledged receipt of the game at the site. I was credited with one “Tier 2” credit, meaning I could request any available Tier 2 titles. I decided I wanted to give Call of Duty: Modern Warfare a try, so I requested an available copy. Unfortunately, a couple days passed and the guy who offered up MW never acknowledged the trade, so I was prompted (by the site) to pick another title. I decided on Pure and promptly got an email from the owner of Pure to arrange the trade. Since we weren’t local to each other, we agreed that he would ship the game to me and a few days later Pure showed up in my mailbox. Everyone lived (and gamed) happily ever after.

You can read more about Flakwolf at GameGirl.

I highly recommend it and suggest you give it a try. And let us know if you do, we’d love to hear how it worked out for you.

December Releases

December 1, 2009 by Tony 3 Comments

It’s the last list of releases for 2009, and as is normal for December, it stinks. This is a good thing. Now maybe we can play catch up. I count two, maybe three titles worth picking up this month (unless one particular title comes out, which will make the list the GREATEST EVER). Not a lot to talk about here, so on to the list:

Week of December 22nd
Guitar Hero Van Halen

Week of December 29th
Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Dead Rising 2 – So. Amazon is saying that Dead Rising 2 is coming out January 1st. Is this true? I checked some places, and all I could find was a release window of “Q1 2010” which technically means it could come out January 1st. But certainly that is wishful thinking. VERY wishful thinking.

Playmobil: Pirates – So, it looks like Playmobil is the next LEGO? Does that mean we can look forward to more? Because that would be the opposite of awesome.

Hey buddy, could you spare some free time?

November 21, 2009 by Tony 1 Comment

Blogging (and gaming) has been light around these parts as a lot of my free time is spent watching and writing about college football. This happens every year, college football is a love of mine and I continue to enjoy blogging about it. But now, for my team at least, the end of college football (until January) has arrived, which means my blogging load at my other site goes down and I can spend a little more time here.

There are days I wish I could do this blogging thing for a living but until that dream is realized I’m just glad to be have some free time once and a while to play some games and chat with you guys about it.

Now, for some games…
